Rocket League Review (PS4)

I really had no intention of playing this game even though I added it to my library while it was free for PS+, but I was looking for something new to play and some free space just happened to open up on my already full PS4 hard drive so I thought what the hell. After playing for the past two weeks, here’s what I thought about the game.

Rocket League is all about playing Soccer, or Football depending on where you’re from, with a bit of demolition derby thrown in just for some added fun. That’s right, Soccer played by little miniature cars. Sound fun? Because it totally is. I didn’t think that a sports game which has absolutely no story, not even the season mode, could actually be so fun to play.

When I first started playing this game, I played almost non-stop. Playing against the computer was fun, playing in the season mode was fun, and even playing online was fun. Unfortunately like most games that are wash, rinse, and repeat repetitive it quickly becomes less and less fun each time you play. I went from playing 3+ hours a day down to playing 30 minutes a day towards the end. While this did ruin my experience with playing just a little bit, I still enjoyed just how new the game was and how it was unlike any other sports game that I played.

The playability for this game is super simple. Drive your car around the field, hit the ball, get the ball into the goal. You don’t even have to learn that many buttons! I will say that at times the camera angles were a little sketchy since most of the time the match is so crazy that you don’t even know where the ball is and using the “ball cam” is basically useless since it makes driving awkward. When you aren’t using the “ball cam” the driving is just about flawless. I’ve played a lot of games where you have to drive around and this by far was the easiest. I liked the way the cars maneuvered and I liked that it was easy to maneuver the car how I wanted. Even jumping for the ball and hitting it in an angel became easy after some practice. I also want to mention that while this game was bug and glitch free, with the exception of one trophy glitch, it did make my PS4 run really hard and get really hot to the point that I had to shut it off for fear of overheating.

The graphics for this game are superb and worthy of the PS4, unlike some other games that I’ve been playing. I didn’t have much expectations going into this game graphic wise, but Rocket League totally delivered. The graphics were crisp and detailed for just about every aspect of this game as well as each different arena that was available to play in. I also liked the graphics that went into making each car as well as the customization although I do wish that there were some more color choices for the cars.

Of course, there are trophies for this game. 36 trophies to be exact and that includes a very do-able platinum trophy. Most of these trophies are extremely easy to get and it really just requires you to play the game. You’ll get a lot of them naturally as you progress through the game, but there are also trophies that you need to grind out. The Stocked trophy requires you to unlock every item in the game for a total of 194 different items. You unlock items by playing so win or lose, you are guaranteed an item at the end of your game. Another trophy you’ll have to grind for is the Far, Far Away… trophy. As of right now I’m pretty sure something is glitched when it comes to this trophy that requires you to travel 500km in distance. Either the wheels aren’t keeping track of the distance traveled correctly or you don’t really have to travel 500 km, I’m really not sure but I do know that the trophy will unlock pretty randomly while you are playing. I did have a little notification come up on my “What’s New” section of my PS4 for milestone distances such as 100 km, 250 km, and then again for 500 km when I got the trophy or then that I never really knew where I stood with this trophy making the grind to get this trophy even more frustrating.

Big Thanks! You need a friend to get the Barras Bravas trophy for this game, and I couldn’t have done it without one of my buddies who was nice enough to help me get this trophy which was the last one I needed for the platinum. Thanks G!

Of course there’s multiplayer for this game because when it comes to a sports game who really wants to play against the AI over and over again? No one and that includes me. Not really one for multiplayer, as you already know if you frequent this blog, I actually really enjoyed the multiplayer portion of this game and actually preferred it. Most of the time my games were lag free, but I did encounter a few server errors during my last couple of games which rendered the online section of this game unplayable. Other then that one little problem, this was one of the best multiplayer experiences that I’ve had in a long time. I enjoyed the people that I played with, and I even enjoyed the quick chat option so that I didn’t have to use a microphone to tell someone that they made a nice shot.

Overall I give this game a 3 out of 5

What’s Great:
+ Soccer and demolition derby makes for some really fun times.
+ Great playability makes driving each of the cars easy and carefree.
+ Nice detailed graphics worthy of the PS4.
+ Multiplayer is the best part of this game.

What’s Not So Great:
Doing the same thing over and over again gets a little repetitive after a while and the game quickly becomes boring.
While the servers were great at first, they were up and down on my last few games making the multiplayer unplayable.
No major bugs or glitches, but my usually cool running PS4 had to work extra hard to play this game and became really hot in the process.

This is a really fun and solid game from Psyonix. Since I’m not a big sports fan I’m glad that I got this one for free, but the $19.99 price tag for the game is worth it if you’re a big sports fan and you plan on playing this game beyond getting the platinum trophy. The servers for this game are still extremely active all day long and I would really like to see the servers become a little more stable in the future as well as something added to the game to make it less repetitive. I think a nice little addition like daily, weekly, monthly, and even personal challenges can go a long way for this game and make it’s shelf life even longer.

    • I haven’t touched the game since getting the platinum trophy. I know it has a ton of new content and new DLC, but it just really doesn’t interest me.
