St. Vincent Review

This was one of those movies that I thought was pretty cool looking when I first seen the trailer one night while watching TV, but then like many movies it just fell off my radar and I completely forgot about it. While scrolling through the “Recently Added” section of Netflix, this title popped up and I remembered just how much I wanted to see this movie and decided that this would be my movie of the week.

St. Vincent revolves around Vince, played by Bill Murray, and he is everything but a saint. Vince was a Vietnam vet who basically spends his days drinking, gambling, and entertaining a “lady of the night”, played by Naomi Watts. All of that changes though when a single mother, played by Melissa McCarthy, and her son Oliver move in next to Vince. Having no other babysitter options since she’s a single mother who works a full time job, Vince becomes Oliver’s babysitter. Oliver gets to see a side of Vince that he doesn’t let anyone else see and the two form an unlikely friendship. This unlikely friendship has a huge impact on both Vince and Oliver as it lets Oliver adjust to his new school and it helps Vince cope with life in general.

I absolutely adored this movie. It was funny and heartwarming all at the same time, which to me is the best kind of movie. Vince lives this sort of double life that no one really knows about. When he’s not out drinking, gambling, and entertaining his Russian prostitute, he’s taking care of his wife with Alzheimer’s disease by going to the nursing home and pretending to be a doctor since she no longer recognizes who he is. He makes sure that his cat, Felix, has the best kind of food while he eats sardines and crackers. He teaches Oliver how to be brave and to stand up for what he believes in. This is the kind of man that Vince is. He’s one of those people that you think are horrible on the outside but turn out to be good people. This makes the whole movie and makes it even more enjoyable to watch.

The cast of this movie is just awesome. You already know how much I love Melissa McCarthy movies, but it was nice to see her take a back seat this time and play a supporting part to the star of the movie which is clearly Bill Murray. Bill Murray does an amazing job of playing Vince to perfection. He’s rude and crass when he needs to be and even when he doesn’t he puts up this barrier as the character Vince so that everyone thinks he’s really a horrible person even though he’s not. I really couldn’t imagine anyone else playing this character.

Overall I give this movie a 5 out of 5.

I’m kind of glad I’ve been on this string of watching great movie after great movie and this is another one that can’t be passed up. It’s one of those movies that you can watch over and over again and have all the same feelings you felt the first time come back the second and third time you watch. It’s a funny and heartwarming story that will have you laughing one minute and crying the next. With the way Netflix has been going lately, I would say to watch this one while you still can because it is definitely worth it.
