The Big Sick Review

The Big Sick

It’s been a really long time since I actually went to the movie theater to see a movie. Like so long that I can’t even remember what the last movie that I actually saw in the theater was. Anyway, there was a new local theater that everyone was raving about and I had seen the preview for this movie on TV probably over a million times at this point that I just figured why not. Keep reading to see what I thought of the movie.

The Big Sick tells the story of Kumail, played by Kumail Nanjiani, who is basically trying to be a good Pakistani son in order to please his parents, played by Anupam Kher and Zenobia Shroff. Doing this means that he basically lies to them and tells them that he’s going to law school and he let’s his mother parade in week after week different Pakistani women to setup an arranged marriage for him. What they don’t know is that he’s trying to break into the world of standup comedy and has basically fallen in love with Emily, played by Zoe Kazan. Emily and Kumail will go through this love / hate relationship until they break up and Emily gets really sick. This will introduce Emily’s parents, played by Holly Hunter and Ray Romano. Throughout the movie Kumail will bond with Emily’s parents and try to find out if he should live his life trying to please his parents or follow his heart.

Movie Theater Experience: My new local theater just happens to be an AMC theater and I’ve never been to one of these before so when I walked in I was surprised that it felt like I was lining up for MegaCon. There was a VIP line and a normal people line. While this is acceptable for MegaCon, it’s not for a movie theater. I also wasn’t pleased with the seating and the lighting in the theater itself. Even before the movie started and after the movie ended, the theater was pitch black and I had to turn on my flashlight to see where I was going. Not fun. Needless to say I will not be attending this movie theater again.

As for the movie itself, I found it to be extremely boring and long. This is never a good combination. The funny parts shown in the trailer were few and far in-between for a movie that is supposed to be a comedy. Also the back and forth between Emily and Kumail gets to the point of annoying at times. I understand the whole wanting to please your family aspect that Kumail is going through, but it wasn’t presented as funny or even touching. It was just plain boring. Even after Emily gets sick and her parents come to take charge of her care, the movie still drags along as it becomes a really bad and really boring episode of Grey’s Anatomy. At least with Grey’s Anatomy something is bound to happen that will either be touching or funny. The fact that Kumail feels the need to lie to everyone, not only his parents, which is understandable, but to Emily and then Emily’s parents just makes it feel unreal and really unforgivable.

This cast does not work well together at all. Kumail’s family doesn’t even feel like a family, but a group of people just thrown together and the audience being told that this is a family. Even the relationship between Kumail and Emily seems forced as the two actors have absolutely no on screen chemistry which is crucial for a romantic comedy. Then the relationship between Kumail and Emly’s family also feels forced and at first that was fine because Emily had told them about Kumail and what happened between them, but even after getting to know him and even liking Kumail to some extent, there was no chemistry. There was no reason to even route for Emily or for the relationship that Kumail tries to save.

Side Note: While this isn’t for everyone, just us Mass Effect: Andromeda players, I couldn’t help but think about Jarun Tann every time Kumail spoke. Whenever Kumail spoke I could see his Salarian character with his big eyes staring back at me even though I wasn’t playing the game. I sometime have this problem when watching a movie with Mila Kunis. Every time I see her on screen it just makes me think of Meg from Family Guy.

Overall I give this movie a 1 out of 5.

I know that this is based on a true story about Kumail and his now wife Emily, but it was just boring as hell to sit through. Two hours of what could have been funny and sweet turned into something that was boring and ended up being a waste of money at the movie theater. I will give it credit for having some funny parts, but it just wasn’t funny as it was promised to be and this was a big problem for me. When you have a movie that is advertised as a romantic comedy I want to be able to laugh a lot and feel connected to the movie in some way. This movie didn’t provide that and if I were you I would skip this movie and spend your money elsewhere.

  1. Thank you! As you’d see on my last post, I almost ALWAYS love the critically acclaimed films and yet I hated this trash film. The honesty is appreciated!
