Blockers Review

Blockers

Wanting to try and watch a decent comedy, since the last couple that I watched were hit and miss, I decided to rent this one off of the PSN store. I had seen the previews for this movie, which looked funny but are usually misleading, and had just met John Cena in person, you can read about my meet and greet with him here. Throwing caution into the wind I figured, why not and rented this movie. Was it the comedy that I was looking for or another failure? Keep reading to find out.

Blockers is about three lifelong friends who are graduating high school, gong to prom, and have decided that they are going to get laid on prom night, played by Geraldine Viswanathan, Kathryn Newton, and Gideon Adlon. While planning on getting laid on prom night, these three girls parents, who are kind of friends because their kids are friends, played by John Cena, Leslie Mann, and Ike Barinholtz, find out and decide that they are going to put a stop to this. This turns into the parents trying to endlessly hunt down their kids during prom night which takes them to a bunch of different places and puts them in a bunch of different scenarios and of course hilarity ensues.

This movie was just hysterical and I spent most of the time watching it laughing because unlike most movies this movie turned out to have previews that actually matched the movie. It’s one of those funny goof ball movies that even though you think it’s just funny, it actually turns out to have a lot of heart because while the kids think they know what they’re doing and what they want, they’ll find out that they don’t and the parents are finding out that it’s basically time to let their kids go and become adults. That means making mistakes and learning from those mistakes without the interference of their parents. Each girl has a story of her own and each parent has a story of their own and they merge together perfectly in this movie. On that note, I will say that the movie was a little gratuitous at times when it came to the over the top type scenes and did have a few cringe worthy moments that were funny, but not necessary for the movie.

While the three girls in this movie played an awesome part of trying to find out who they are and what they want to do with the rest of their lives basically in this one night, the show is basically stolen by the three parents, John Cena, Leslie Mann, and Ike Barinholtz. These three actors are just super funny and the perfect comedic match for each other as they play off of each other really well and make the movie probably funnier than it would have been without them. While the movie is well written, I think that it was the parents that made this movie as funny as it was and that this was one of the movies that really depended on the actors to just knock it out of the park with their performances and they do.

Overall I give this movie a 4 out of 5.

I would say that if you’re searching for a movie that is going to make you laugh and maybe have a little bit of heart to it, then Blockers is the movie for you. It has that great blend of being funny and still having those heartfelt moments throughout the movie. It’s really a movie about parents having to let go and it’s done in the most funniest way possible. Yes, there were some unnecessary scenes throughout the movie, but they were few and far in between so the movie just didn’t become one big fart joke. This is also one of the movies where the cast makes it a whole lot better than it probably should have, because of that I would strongly recommend this movie.
