Castaway Paradise Review (PS4)

Castaway Paradise

When this game was first revealed on the PS Blog, I was immediately intrigued because of my love of Animal Crossing on the Nintendo Wii. I loved Animal Crossing so much that at the time I actually pleaded with my local Blockbuster, when there was a Blockbuster, to sell me the copy that I was constantly renting. It all worked out for the best and I had myself Animal Crossing which I sunk hundreds and hundreds of hours into. This game looked very much similar, which was why it was a day one buy for me. It also took a few weeks, but I was able to get all of the trophies including the platinum which means that it’s time for a review.

In Castaway Paradise, you play as some random human who becomes shipwrecked on an island that has been destroyed by a storm. There you will meet some funky animal creatures who all need help restoring the island and will have you do various different tasks in order to do so. While you’ll basically play errand girl or boy, you’ll also do other things like fish, collect bugs, and collect shells which you can sell for profit or you can donate to the local museum in order to build it back up to what it used to be. The choice is yours on how you play this game and why you play in this weird little version of an Animal Crossing type game.

I have to start off by saying that I was a little let down by this game. Coming from a game like Animal Crossing, which is just huge and always changing, I didn’t like that this game never changed. It didn’t matter if I played at night or during the day because it was always day time. I played in the summer so it was always summer, so I’m not sure if the seasons change like they do in Animal Crossing. All bugs and fish are available all the time no matter what so there’s no real strategy on how and where to catch them and the shells are random. The animals of Castaway Paradise are a constant and they don’t change. You’ll interact with the same characters over and over again without someone threatening or debating to move away. Sadly, while this game was fun for the two weeks that I played it, it just wasn’t Animal Crossing. While that’s fine if you’ve never played Animal Crossing and you just want a cute little game where you run around and hunt for bugs, hunt for fish, farm, and help out the poor little creatures of Castaway Paradise, it’s kind of a letdown if you’ve played Animal Crossing and then go to this poor man’s version.

While the mechanics for this game for the most part worked perfectly, there were some random glitches in there that caused the game to freeze when talking to some of the characters for no reason. This made the game have to be shut off and restarted. The only good thing that came out of this is that the game was constantly saving so nothing was ever lost. While the having to restart the game isn’t good, the part that I didn’t lose any of my data was also good. This made something good out of a bad situation. The controls are a bit awkward at first and take some time getting used to, but once you finally do you’ll be playing like a pro as you fish, hunt for bugs, farm, and help out random animals for hours on end. The only new thing that this game added that Animal Crossing doesn’t have is a leveling up system. I don’t really see what this did other than unlock certain objects, plants, trees, and vegetables. Anyway, it was there and I guess it added to the game in a way where it made you strive for something.

The graphics for this game are basically the same as they are for Animal Crossing. This is OK, but coming from the PS4 I was expecting something just a little bit better in the graphics department. I thought your character could have been designed just a little bit better, but other than that there’s not much to complain about because it was almost an exact replica of Animal Crossing.

Trophies, there are trophies for this game! There are a total of 41 trophies for this game and all of them are super easy to get. They just require a lot of time and dedication in order to get them along with a lot of farming. The trophies range from collecting things for the museum to rebuilding the whole island, to doing quests for the animals, and to planting each and every thing that Castaway Paradise has to offer. This means that you have to level up your character to at least level 34 which means you’ll spend your last days playing this game constantly farming Tomatoes.

There is no multiplayer for this game. It kind of makes sense because you’re supposed to be some random person who just washes up ashore on a deserted island that has been destroyed, but I did like the multiplayer in Animal Crossing. It would have been nice to be able to invite a friend over to my island and have someone else run around with me and do random tasks or do the normal hunt for bugs, fish, and farm. Anyway, it worked fine as a single player game and I’m sure if it was a multiplayer game there would have been a bunch of obscure trophies for it that would have made this game annoying.

Overall I give this game a 3 out of 5.

What’s Great:
+ This is a cute little game that for the money spent ($14.99) it gives you a lot of value and replay time.
+ There are a bunch of things to do so you can basically do whatever you want.
+ The graphics are nice and even though there were some game breaking bugs, they didn’t ruin the save file for the game.

What’s Not So Great:
While this is supposed to basically serve as the PS4 version of Animal Crossing, it really doesn’t deliver on that front as things that makes Animal Crossing unique are not at all utilized in this game.
After a while the game becomes very repetitive and loses its charm over time as you do the same thing day in and day out.

I know that I’ve spent a lot of time comparing this game to Animal Crossing, but it’s because that’s basically what this game was supposed to be like just for the PS4. If you want to look at it in terms of did it live up to the legacy that is Animal Crossing, then the answer is no. If you’re looking for an Animal Crossing port onto your PS4 then you’ll want to skip this one as you’ll quickly see that this is a poor mans version of Animal Crossing. If you go into this game with no expectations and have never even played Animal Crossing, then I think you’ll truly enjoy this game as it lets you free roam a devastated island and help the animals of the destroyed island rebuild and basically do whatever you want. If you want to play this game, while the value is good, I would still recommend waiting for a sale on this game since it seems like one of those games that will quickly go on sale.

This Week in Trophies 08-19-2018 – 08-25-2018

This was a decent week in trophies for me. I didn’t hit the 40 or 50 mark, but I did get a decent amount of trophies and I was able to get a platinum trophy at the very beginning of the week, which was great. Anyway, let’s get into the trophies that I was able to get this week.

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate – 77%

I am one trophy away from getting this platinum trophy and I’m extremely excited because this will be my third platinum trophy for an Assassin’s Creed game. Not that great considering I’ve basically played all of the Assassin’s Creed games. Anyway, I plan to have the platinum trophy for this game by the end of the week.

Castaway Paradise – 100%

I was finally able to finish this game! Which does mean that I won’t be saying much about it there, but I will have my review posted for this game this Wednesday so stay tuned for it!

Fallout Shelter – 98%

I’m so close to finishing this game that I might even have the platinum trophy while I write this! This is extremely exciting since I’ve been playing and complaining about this game for months. After writing this blog I’ll go check and hopefully the platinum trophy will have popped making me extremely happy and making it a great way to start off the week.

Steven Universe: Save The Light – 25%

I finally finished this game and I have to say this game is extremely stingy when it comes to giving out the trophies. Anyway, I’m looking forward to going back and finishing up this game and getting yet another platinum trophy. Will I get it this week, I have no idea, but I’m looking forward to playing and seeing.

Steven Universe: Save the Light

The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series Collection – 19%

So I finally finished season one of this collection, along with the DLC for the first season and am well on my way to working on the second season. I’m having a really great time replaying this game and I’m excited because I want to play this and play the final season which is eagerly awaiting me on my PS4.

A total of 23 trophies this week including one platinum trophy which is just great since I’ve been in a platinum trophy slump for some time. This upcoming week will be for finishing a bunch of games and hopefully getting a bunch of platinum trophies. We’ll see how things turn out and I might even start a new game this week. As always, I’ll let you know all about my trophies next week.

This Week in Trophies 08-12-2018 – 08-18-2018

This wasn’t the best week for me trophy wise. At least I had a few weeks of a really good run though right? It wasn’t because of lack of trying, but it was a bunch of other stuff that I don’t really feel comfortable talking about just yet. So instead of getting into that, let’s just see what trophies I was able to get this weekend.

Castaway Paradise – 98%

I am one trophy away from the platinum. I just need to level up to 34 and I’m currently sitting at 26. It’s going to take a lot of farming and I mean literal farming because I spend hours farming tomatoes in this game in order to level up. While it’s tedious and not really fun, I really want to finish this game and get the platinum trophy.

Castaway ParadiseCastaway ParadiseCastaway Paradise

Fallout Shelter – 93%

Ugh, this damn game is taking forever! I just want this game to be done and I should be getting another trophy for this game within the next 5 days as I craft my final theme. Other than that I just need some more Raider attacks which is a pain in the ass and completing 100 additional quests. After I do all of that I will finally have the platinum trophy for this game!

Fallout Shelter

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice – 28%

I’m on the border of if I like this game or not. The whole corruption thing is freaking me out to the point of where I’m so afraid of dying in this game because while I have to do another run through because I missed a collectible, I don’t want to reach the almost end of this game and end up dying only to have to play all over again.

Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice

Steven Universe: Save The Light – 16%

I’m continuing to just love this game because it’s Steven Universe and I love Steven Universe. I wish I had more time to play, but that’s just how it is at the moment. At least I was able to get one trophy this week so it didn’t feel like a complete waste.

Steven Universe: Save the Light

The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series Collection – 4%

So I didn’t think I would enjoy jumping back into The Walking Dead and playing all over again, but I totally am. I’m enjoying it so much that I’m delaying playing the final season until I run through all of the seasons in this collection and then I’ll start the final season which I’m itching to play.

The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series - Collection

A total of 7 trophies this week, which did kind of suck, but it is what it is and I’m willing to accept that. I’m close to finishing a lot of games so I think I’ll be spending most of my week doing that and I’ll try to get to streaming and get to some other games on the weekend. I look forward to another week of trophies and hopefully I can get more than 7 this upcoming week. I’ll let you know how things work out next week.

This Week in Trophies 08-05-2018 – 08-11-2018

After my impressive trophy haul last week, I wasn’t sure if I could keep it up this week and was really nervous that I would drop down to my usual 7 trophies or even less. I have to say that I totally kicked ass again this week and only fell short in the trophy department by two trophies. I couldn’t even believe it when I was looking at my stats for the week. With that being said, let’s get into the trophies for this week.

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate – 65%

Now that I’ve finished the game, I had my final stream of the story mode this past Friday, I just have to go back and finish up some random trophies in order to get the platinum. This is usually where the fatigue part of a game comes in, but the trophies that I’m missing are so do-able that it would be just crazy if I didn’t see it through and get them done.

Castaway Paradise – 93%

Although I also finished streaming this game, because no one really wants to see me run around collecting shells and just trying to power level, I’m still trying extremely hard to get this platinum trophy. It’s going to take a lot of grinding, but if I make it a daily ritual type game like Gems of War and Fallout Shelter then I think that I can do it.

Fallout Shelter – 84%

Talking about Fallout Shelter, I was able to make some more progress on this game this week. I’m not really enjoying it as I’m over this game, but I just need to finish up a few more trophies to finally be free of this game and get my first Fallout platinum trophy.

Fallout ShelterFallout Shelter

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice – 18%

I’ve heard so many good things about this game that I finally bought it and started to play it this week. I’m in the middle of liking it and being so freaked out by it that I don’t even want to play it. I’m not sure if I’m even going to make it through my playthrough because the corruption that grows on you each time you die is up to my elbow already. Here’s hoping I can get through this game in one playthrough.

Hellblade: Senua's SacrificeHellblade: Senua's Sacrifice

Steven Universe: Save the Light – 13%

If you follow this blog or follow me on Twitter, you know how much I love Steven Universe. I just had to have this game and I’ve been having a blast playing it. Sure, it’s aggravating at times with the lack of map and is really a poorly made RPG, but it’s Steven Universe so I kind of love it.

Steven Universe: Save the LightSteven Universe: Save the LightSteven Universe: Save the LightSteven Universe: Save the LightSteven Universe: Save the Light

The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series – Collection – 3%

I really didn’t think I would be playing through the whole series of The Walking Dead again, but here I am because it came with the pre-order and came with a bunch of new trophies and a new platinum. This is the fourth time that I’m playing through the first two seasons and will be the second time I’m playing through the third season and the Michonne part. Even though I thought I would be suffering from some The Walking Dead fatigue from playing the same game so much, I’m actually loving it.

Word Search by POWGI (PS4) – 26%

I found this little game by surprise this week and just couldn’t pass it up because it was a cross-buy and it was only $8. I even convinced my friend @tjarvinen86 to get it and we’re kind of in this competition to see who can get the platinum first. He totally will since she’s been playing this game non-stop, but you never know I might just surprise him and snatch up the platinum before he does.

Word Search by POWGI (PS Vita) – 29%

I did say that this was a cross-buy and even though I should have probably just stuck to one system instead of two, that just wasn’t happening so here I am playing both at the same time. This one is a little easier for me to play because I can bring my PS Vita anywhere. More specifically, I can bring it to work and that’s what’s helping me progress with this game.

And that’s it for the week, a total of 43 trophies. Two weeks with over 40 trophies in each week is extremely rare for me and I would love to keep up this pace, but I’m not sure that I’ll be able to. We’ll all see how everything works out next week as I continue to basically follow the same routine that I’ve been following because it works. Also my OCD brain loves the routine, so I’ll let you know how things turn out next week.

This Week in Trophies 07-29-2018 – 08-04-2018

Can I just say I totally kicked ass in the trophy department this week? After a disappointing week last week, I just knew I had to get back out there and crush it. I totally did this week and I’m super happy about it. I know it probably won’t last, but it’ll be nice to bask in all my trophy glory for at least a day. Here’s how my week went.

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate – 49%

I’m almost finished with this game. As I close in on my last mission and then run around to do some random stuff, this might actually be platinum trophy number 90. Or it might not. At this point I’m not sure of how much of a grind I’m going to have to endure once the game is over, so I look forward to seeing and to seeing if I can actually get the platinum for this game.

For those of you who owned a Wii, this is basically a poor man’s Animal Crossing. I say a poor man’s Animal Crossing because while it embodies the whole Animal Crossing vibe, it does it in a cheap way to where it’s always day time no matter when you play and while it says it has events, like now is summer, I’m doubtful as to what the other seasons bring. Not to mention, all of the animals on the island are the same. While I am enjoying my time playing, I’ll save my final judgement for when I get the platinum for this game. Will this game be platinum number 90?

Fallout Shelter – 73%

How I hate this game so much now as it constantly crashes my PS4 and pops trophies at the most random of times. I didn’t even complete the trophy that popped, but at this point I really don’t care as I want this game to be over and done with so I can delete it from my system.

Fallout Shelter

Gems of War – 82%

Yes, I still play this game. Can I believe that I still play this game, no not really, but I do. Anyway, I finally reached level 250 this week and got a trophy for it. This is one of those grindy games that I feel like I have to play and do on a daily basis in order to keep my guild up. If you also still play this game and are looking for a guild to join, I have 28 slots available and am willing to take anyone as long as you participate in the weekly events. Any takers? Let me know down in the comments section below.

Gems of War

Are you ready for this total? This insane number of trophies that I haven’t been able to hit since I don’t remember when? A total of 45 trophies this week! Can you believe it? I sure as hell can’t. This was just an amazing week of trophies and I even hit the 8,500 mark in trophies and actually didn’t even realize it until today. I also outdid myself and went past my own milestone marker. That’s some amazing stuff. As for the upcoming week, I’ll continue to keep doing what I did this week since it seemed to work. Will it work this week? I’m not sure so come back next week to find out.
