Diablo III: Reaper of Souls Review (PS4)

Diablo III: Reaper of Souls

This is one of those games that I originally played on the PS3 and then bought again on the PS4 because I enjoyed it so much. Unfortunately though this time instead of playing it right away, it sat in my backlog for the longest possible time. I purchased this game so long ago that I don’t even remember when I bought it. Anyway, now that I actually finished it for a second time and did everything there is to do within the game, it’s time for a review.

Diablo III: Reaper of Souls has not only the fifth and final act of this game in it, but it also has the complete first four acts of Diablo III. Let’s start with Diablo III first then. Diablo III is about your character, a barbarian, a witch doctor, a wizard, a monk, a demon hunter, my personal favorite, a crusader, and now a necromancer, if you have the DLC, finding their way to Sanctuary. Your character is in Sanctuary because of the falling star that has fell from the heavens and into the cathedral. There you’ll meet up with Leah and Deckard Cain to basically find the falling star. Turns out the falling star is Tyrael, the Aspect of Justice, and he has fallen from the heavens in order to stop Diablo and the lords of hell. This is up to you to do and there will be different twists and turns throughout the game until your final battle with Diablo himself. That’s not it though, with the introduction of Reaper of Souls, there are more problems to solve. After the events of Diablo III, Tyrael has taken possession of the Black Soul Stone but needs your characters help once more to protect it from corruption. To do that you’ll have to face death and defeat death himself, Malthael. Will your character survive and save the world of Diablo once more? All will be answered and more by the end of the expansion.

I have to say that I will always love this game. That is the first time that I play it and experience it. When I first played it on the PS3, I thought it was just amazing, and I thought the same thing of my first playthrough with the PS4 version. What really kills this game for me though is the amount of times that you actually have to play it. The repetitive nature of this game becomes boring and chore like if you’re playing alone, but can be fun if you want to just get away from it all and hang out with a friend to play. This time around I had a mixture of both. While I did get some alone time to play, I spent most of my time playing with my buddy mmaddmaxx12. He started off as a noob in this game to being overly impressed on how easy it was for me to play to becoming 10x time Diablo player I’ll ever be. He streams this game often, and you can watch him stream here because he’s awesome. Make sure to give him a follow and just watch him kick some ass. Anyway, having to play each character to level 70, along with playing on Hardcore mode, and then playing the bounties really took its toll on me this time around and by the end of the game I was just happy that I was finished and can easily say that I will never touch this game again.

The playabilty of this game is simple depending on the character that you choose. I found that playing the demon hunter is the easiest characters of them all because she’s a ranged character where the other characters were basically a mix of ranged and up close and in your face. Each character has a skill set that you have to learn in order to play and sometimes that can get a little frustrating depending on the character. Once you learn the ins and outs of your character you should be good to go. Each act will give you different quests to complete and all of this went off without a problem and by the end of the game you’ll have adventure mode where you can travel through the world of Diablo and take on bounties. I have to say that everything for this game just worked perfectly and there were no bugs or glitches throughout my 7 months of playing.

The graphics for this game are quite simple since it is a dungeon crawler game. Nothing is up close and everything is in a very far away third person view as you move from area to area. The one thing that shines throughout this game are the cut scenes. These are just so beautifully crafted and it really adds to the game. Each and every cut scene is carefully crafted and it’s moments like those that add to the game and make it a work of art.

There are a total of 44 trophies for this game including a platinum trophy and extra 10 trophies if you buy the DLC and play as the necromancer. The trophies are pretty simple to get and just require time. A lot of time to actually play. This gets a little tedious as it’s not easy to level up every single character to 70 and then level up a hardcore character to 70 and beat the whole game with the character. Gone is the trophy that requires you to get 5,000,000 gold from the PS3 version and it’s replaced with completing 500 bounties. Sounds better than getting 5,000,000 gold right? Wrong. This will take up most of your time as on each level of difficulty you only have 25 bounties to complete. Once you’re finished you can start again or move up in difficulty. I decided to move up in difficulty and was actually able to get to torment level 11 before starting again. Needles to say this is a trophy list that can be done if you have the time to do it.

Now to the online portion of this game. When I first played on the PS3, I played with a bunch of randoms and this kind of ruined the experience for me. This wasn’t fun and I didn’t enjoy playing with someone who wasn’t on the same page that I was. Cut to the PS4 version of this game where I played basically the whole game with my buddy, and we had an absolute blast as we played. We streamed most of our play time and it was just great since we were both of the same page and went in with a plan of what we were going to accomplish for the playtime that we had. There were some connection issues and we did get disconnected a little bit, but it wasn’t enough to actually be annoyed about. Here’s the thing though, if you’re going to play solo, it gets boring and if you play with randoms it can get tedious and annoying. My suggestion would be to play with a buddy who has this game and it turns into a completely different game and raises the enjoyment level.

Overall I give this game a 4 out of 5.

What’s Great:
+ Solid story line that is interesting the first time around, both the original game and the expansion pack.
+ There’s a lot to do in this game and it basically takes forever to fully complete so there are no complaints that the game is too short.
+ Typical dungeon crawler graphics with some pretty amazing cut scene graphics.
+ The best way to play is with a buddy through co-op it makes the game 10x more fun than playing alone.

What’s Not So Great:
After the first playthrough of this game, the actual value of this game starts to decline as you do the same things over and over again but with different characters and different modes.

I liked how this game was basically open ended after the DLC expansion and I really can’t wait for a Diablo IV. I had a great time playing this game on the PS3 and on the PS4. Yes it was tedious and I can officially say that I’m done with this game now, but if and when Diablo IV is ever announced it would be a day one purchase for me. This is just a really awesome game that I’m glad finally made its way over to consoles and it’s a game worth getting. I would say that if you enjoy dungeon crawlers with a deep and rich story and you don’t mind going back to play 100 + times, then this is the game for you.

This Week in Trophies 02-18-2018 – 02-24-2018

This is going to be a really short blog this week and I apologize, but there is just a hell of a lot going on. When I’m not working, I’m still taking care of my dad who is recovering nicely from hip replacement surgery and when I’m not doing that, I’m working on other projects which leaves little time for gaming. I’m lucky if I can get in a little time before work to play and a little time after work to play. Anyway, onto the trophies.

Diablo III: Reaper of Souls – 85%

After 7 longs months of playing this game, I finally finished and got the platinum trophy. You know how it is though I don’t like to spill the beans too much about the game here, so look for my full review on this game this upcoming Wednesday.

Diablo III: Reaper of SoulsDiablo III: Reaper of Souls

And that was it for this week. Two trophies, but at least one of them was a platinum. That has to count for something right? As for the upcoming week, I have no idea how that’s going to go, what I’m going to be playing, or if I’ll even get any trophies. If I do get some trophies I’ll let you know right here next week.

This Week in Trophies 02-11-2018 – 02-17-2018

This was a really tough week to get trophies. Not from lack of trying but because of a lot of different reasons. The first of course was work. Work was particularly stressful this week as I tried to get as much done like I normally do, but with the added stress of having my dad go for a hip replacement surgery just kind of threw everything over the edge. I was able to sneak in a tattoo session there along the way which I’ll tell you about later on, but needless to say this week and the upcoming weeks will not be good ones for gaming. Here’s a breakdown of what I was able to get in trophies this past week

BioShock – 10%

I re-purchased this game for the PS4 with the sole intention of streaming it. When I had a poll going on Twitter, this was the game people wanted me to stream. Turns out you can’t stream it because it’s blocked. Oh joy of joys. Anyway, I am filming it I just have to try and get some time to edit it and post it to YouTube. I played one day this week and was able to get a few trophies and was happy to return to Rapture.

Diablo III: Reaper of Souls – 82%

I was able to get two more trophies for this game this week meaning that I only need one more trophy to actually get the platinum for this game. I’m up to 185 out of 500 bounties that I need for the trophies. Needless to say this is going to take a while especially with my limited time.

Diablo III: Reaper of SoulsDiablo III: Reaper of Souls

And that was it for this week, a total of 11 trophies. My dad did make it out of his hip replacement surgery with flying colors which is why I’ll probably be taking a little break from gaming. Not too much, but I have been asked to care for him on the days that I’m not working, and that’s what you do for family. I’ll try to sneak some games in while I can but it’s not going to be anything big and I think that streaming is off the table for a little while as well. If for some reason I get any trophies in this upcoming week, I’ll let you know about them.

This Week in Trophies 02-04-2018 – 02-10-2018

This week was an OK week for trophies. It wasn’t the best week and it wasn’t the worst week either. I did finish a game, progress in a couple of games, and get a little closer to getting a platinum in a game so all in all I’m pretty happy. Here’s a breakdown of my trophies for the week.

Assassin’s Creed Origins – 62%

I finished this game a few weeks back, but I’m still trying to go back and find / complete all of the locations along with a bunch of random trophies. I’m not complaining because the game is good, but my only complaint is the little question marks on the map are ridiculously hard to actually see. I can’t tell you how many times I passed an area on the map only to go back at a later date and discover that I missed a question mark. It’s a little aggravating, but I’m determined to get this platinum trophy.

Diablo III: Reaper of Souls – 79%

I’m so close to being done with this game that it’s crazy. I only need three more trophies. One which is easy, the second that I’m close to, and the third that is so far off that it feels like I’m never going to get it. Yes, I’m talking about the trophy for doing 500 bounties. If you thought that the 5,000,000 gold in Diablo III for the PS3 was hard, this is even harder. I want to give a big thank you to my buddy mmaddmaxx12, do me a favor and give him a follow on twitch because he’s cool and he’s awesome at not only Diablo III but also Doom, who helped power level my hardcore character after my first hardcore character died at level 69 which was just an insult.

Diablo III: Reaper of Souls

Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 – 48%

Damn this game is hard! I have never played a Pac-Man game that was this damn hard. I mean seriously, this is just crazy. So when it comes to this game, I basically play until I get frustrated and call it a day. I can’t complain though because I got the majority of my trophies from this game this week.

PAC-MAN CHAMPIONSHIP EDITION 2PAC-MAN CHAMPIONSHIP EDITION 2PAC-MAN CHAMPIONSHIP EDITION 2PAC-MAN CHAMPIONSHIP EDITION 2PAC-MAN CHAMPIONSHIP EDITION 2PAC-MAN CHAMPIONSHIP EDITION 2

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus – 27%

I finally finished this game, damn it was hard, and I have to say that after all of my bitching about it that it had an amazing ending. I seriously loved it. It was so satisfying and I really couldn’t have asked for a better ending. I know this isn’t the end of Wolfenstein and I’m looking forward to another game. Getting the platinum for this game though is a different story because I couldn’t even beat this game on hard, I had to play on Normal.

Wolfenstein II: The New ColossusWolfenstein II: The New ColossusWolfenstein II: The New ColossusWolfenstein II: The New ColossusWolfenstein II: The New Colossus

There you have it, 15 trophies for the week. A bit of a step down from last week, but at least it was something. Honestly I didn’t think I would even get this amount of trophies to begin with at the start of the week so I’m not complaining. As for the upcoming week, I have a bunch of stuff going on with work, personal stuff, and a tattoo appointment at the end of the week. I really know how to plan because I make sure that when it rains it pours. Anyway, when I do get a chance to play I’m going to continue playing Assassin’s Creed Origins, Pac-Man Championship Edition 2, Diablo III: Reaper of Souls, and I’m going to hopefully start streaming BioShock sporadically. I’ll let you know how things go next week.

This Week in Trophies 12-17-2017 – 12-30-2017

This has been a crazy two weeks with being sick and on bed rest, to all the holiday stuff, to some work stuff, it was a surprise that I was even able to get some trophies in and even get one platinum trophy in as well. Let’s get into it and see what I’ve been up to these past two weeks.

Diablo III: Reaper of Souls – 71%

When I started to feel better this week, I decided to jump back into this game with my buddy mmaddmaxx12 and start getting to that platinum trophy. He was nice enough to power level some of my characters for me and we even went into hardcore mode and played the whole game before I tragically died before hitting level 70. Needless to say, he got the platinum trophy, I didn’t but I’m pretty close so just some more grinding and I’ll be fine.

Diablo III: Reaper of SoulsDiablo III: Reaper of SoulsDiablo III: Reaper of SoulsDiablo III: Reaper of SoulsDiablo III: Reaper of SoulsDiablo III: Reaper of Souls

Doom – 15%

During my last stream of Doom before I got really sick, I was able to get one trophy while dying over and over and over again. I swear that game should have a trophy for dying. Anyway, I’m still enjoying it and am looking forward to getting back into it to play this upcoming week.

Doom

Minecraft: Story Mode – Season 2 – 100%

The final episode of this game was released and I finally was able to play it this week. That also means that I got the platinum trophy for it. My reviews are still a little backed up, but this one is coming soon I promise so you can see what I thought about the final episode.

And that was it for two weeks. 14 trophies including one platinum trophy. Not my greatest week and it totally sucks being sick. I want to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very happy and safe new year though. Good luck to all my gamers out there looking to finish that one game and get that last platinum trophy before midnight tonight. I might or might not be one of those people, but you’ll have to wait and see if I did that next week.

This Week in Trophies 11-19-2017 – 11-25-2017

This was a pretty exciting week for trophies because I finally reached my 8,000th trophy. That’s some pretty exciting stuff, hitting a trophy milestone. It make the rest of the week just seem like you can basically do anything when it comes to trophies. Let’s get into my weekly breakdown so you can see what I played and what trophies I was able to get.

Assassin’s Creed: Origins – 27%

This game is just huge and it’s taking me forever to get through. I’m seriously not complaining though because I am genuinely enjoying every second of it. I think that this is a great game that has a bunch of exploration, a super story to go with it, and just a lot of things that were fixed from previous Assassin’s Creed games. I’m enjoying it so much that I’ll be streaming it all week.

Batman: The Enemy Within – 60%

The third episode for this game came out this week and I was able to play it. I can’t say much about it because I leave that for my reviews, which as you know because I tell you all the time, are seriously backed-up.

Batman: The Enemy WithinBatman: The Enemy WithinBatman: The Enemy WithinBatman: The Enemy WithinBatman: The Enemy WithinBatman: The Enemy Within

Diablo III: Reaper of Souls – 52%

There’s only one trophy this week for this game, but it holds a special place in my heart because it was my 8,000th trophy. I went from hating trophies to loving them to getting to 8,000 of them. Anyway, at the moment I’m trying to level up as many characters a possible and working on the Barbarian. I’m not having a lot of fun with her and really can’t wait until she hits level 70 so I can move on.

Diablo III: Reaper of Souls

Star Wars Battlefront II – 33%

I finished the campaign mode this week and wow…that was really short. I mean I wasn’t expecting something of epic proportions but seriously it was only 10 hours at the most. Not really a campaign mode if you ask me. Not to mention the last mission completely glitched on me. Like glitched where I had to re-start the game and then when I restarted it my system completely crashed. Databases had to be rebuilt and it made me want to smash my controller into little tiny pieces.

That was it for this milestone week. 26 trophies to add to my collection. Next week is going to be a lot of Assassin’s Creed: Origins, but I’ll also be trying to finish up South Park: The Fractured But Whole as I’m playing my mastermind difficulty playthough. I’ll also try to get into some Star Wars Battlefront II multiplayer while playing some Diablo III: Reaper of Souls and getting back into the Sims 4. It’s going to be a busy week and I’ll let you know how things turn out next week.

This Week in Trophies 11-05-2017 – 11-11-2017

Trophy wise this was a pretty crazy week as I was able to get one platinum trophy, it could have been two, but I didn’t find the time, finished two games, started a new game, and just overall had a pretty busy trophy week. Anyway, let’s get into what trophies I was able to get for this week.

Wolfenstein: The New Order – 100%

This was my biggest accomplishment this week as I was finally able to get the platinum trophy after three weeks of playing this game. I can’t believe I played for three weeks and it sure as hell didn’t feel like I played that long. Anyway, my review for this game will be coming out in the upcoming weeks so stay tuned for that.

Wolfenstein: The New OrderWolfenstein: The New OrderWolfenstein: The New Order

Shoppe Keep – 73%

This game still isn’t fixed and keeps crashing every so often at random times so playing it is tedious. Since I’m at the point of the game where you can set the day up and basically walk away, I play when I’m doing other things and don’t mind stopping to take on barbarians every so often. I will be happy when they patch this game though and fix the crash error.

Shoppe Keep

Assassin’s Creed: Origins – 2%

I was only able to get one day of playtime with this game, but I completely fell in love with it and can’t wait until I can get into this game a little more. The year long break of Assassin’s Creed games was well worth it as Origins offers a new story and some amazing game play. I’m not that far into the game yet, but I’m really excited to see where it goes.

Assassin's Creed: OriginsAssassin's Creed: Origins

South Park: The Fractured But Whole – 82%

I finally beat this game this week and the only thing I have to do is finish up with some collectibles and play on the hardest difficulty. This I know is going to be a chore, but I’m going to push myself through it and play this game a second time just because I really want to be done with this game and not have it hanging on my trophy list as unfinished.

South Park: The Fractured But WholeSouth Park: The Fractured But WholeSouth Park: The Fractured But WholeSouth Park: The Fractured But WholeSouth Park: The Fractured But WholeSouth Park: The Fractured But WholeSouth Park: The Fractured But Whole

Diablo III: Reaper of Souls – 42%

After playing this game months ago, I finally finished all five acts with a friend of mine and couldn’t be more happier to finally be able to explore bounties and rifts. I know this game is going to take a while to complete and I’m fine with that because I’m just going to take my time and play casually.

And that was it for the week. A decent week especially because of the platinum trophy. Next week is going to be crazy because I’ll be playing and streaming Assassin’s Creed: Origins, trying to finish up South Park: The Fractured But Whole, try to play the newest episode of Minecraft: Story Mode Season 2 and the final episode of Guardians of the Galaxy, get some Diablo III: Reaper of Souls time in there, and play 2 new games. It’s going to be crazy and I’ll let you know next week if I was able to pull it off.

Tentative Streaming Schedule for the Week of 11-12-2017 – 11-18-2017

Last week wasn’t bad when it came to sticking to my streaming schedule. I’ll try my hardest this week again to do the same thing, but as always the schedule is tentative and could change at any time. Also my time’s for streaming are in eastern times.

I know my schedule for streaming is a little on the weak side again this week, but there are a few things going on that are unavoidable and will prevent me from streaming. A lot of thins also depends on if I get some pre-ordered games in that I’m supposed to be getting by mid week.

Since I finished South Park: The Fractured But Whole, I’ll be sticking to Assassin’s Creed: Origins this week along with some Diablo III: Reaper of Souls when my buddy is around. Other than that, I don’t plan on streaming all to much, but if I do change things up you can easily find out what I’m changing by following me on Twitch. Also, I am always looking for suggestions on what you want to see me stream. I’m even open to doing a co-op stream if anyone is interested let me know and we can set something up or let me know if you want in on my stream of Diablo III: Reaper of Souls. Since it’s just me and my buddy I have two open spaces available and wouldn’t mind someone jumping in.

This Week in Trophies 10-29-2017 – 11-04-2017

So this was a really bad week in trophies, I’m not going to sugar coat it, but I only was able to get 1 trophy. I had a really horrible sinus infection, had to work through the whole thing, and basically came home and passed out each night from a mixture of medication and just plain old exhaustion. Take a look to see the one trophy I was able to get.

Diablo III: Reaper of Souls – 24%

So last week, a buddy of mine finally picked this game up and we started playing last weekend. I was able to get one trophy after completely deleting my level 50 character to start new with him. Turns out he totally went ahead of me and I’m stuck in Act II trying to re-level up my character to advance in this game. Thanks buddy! Anyway, at least I got a trophy out of it.

Diablo III: Reaper of Souls

And that was it, I told you only one trophy this week. Being sick and all I think that 1 trophy isn’t that bad. I know it’s really bad and I’m like totally pissed about it, but it happens. Now for this upcoming week, I plan on finally getting my platinum trophy for Wolfenstein: The New Order and that might actually happen today, finishing up South Park: The Fractured But Whole, starting Assassin’s Creed: Origins (finally), and getting back into playing Diablo III: Reaper of Souls because I really want to finish the game and work on the platinum. I’ll let you know how everything turns out next week.

Tentative Streaming Schedule for the Week of 11-05-2017 – 11-11-2017

I know that last week I did really bad when it came to sticking to this schedule and I apologize but I was pretty damn sick and not only do I hate being sick, but I hate playing video games as well. I know, I know. How can a gamer hate playing video games? It happens and it happens to me when I’m sick. Anyway, here is my tentative schedule for the upcoming week.

There you have it, my schedule for the week. I know it’s a little on the light side, but this upcoming week is going to be extremely busy for me so this is about all the time that I’ll have to game. In the upcoming weeks, I’ll try to beef up my streaming schedule.

I’m not sure if I’m even close to finishing South Park: The Fractured But Whole, I thought I was last week, but this game seems to be stretching on a little bit too long if you ask me. What I’m most excited for though, since I’ve had this game sitting here for over a week now is finally playing Assassin’s Creed: Origins. I wish I had more time to play it though. Also, I am always looking for suggestions on what you want to see me stream. I’m even open to doing a co-op stream if anyone is interested let me know and we can set something up or let me know if you want in on my stream of Diablo III: Reaper of Souls.
