Dying Light Review (PS4)

Dying Light

I started this game way back in 2016 and it wasn’t until last year, at the urging of my buddy @tjarvinen86, that I picked it back up and started playing again. Even though I now had some consistent help, it still seemed to be one of those games that would end up on my I Never Finished…Because blog. I busted my ass though and did a major grind on this game and even went as far as setting up a gaming session to get the platinum trophy. With the platinum trophy proudly mine for this game I can finally say, it’s time for a review.

In Dying Light, you play as Kyle Crane who is an undercover agent for the GRE. Quite literally dropped off in Harran, Kyle’s initial mission is to find rogue politician and newly established war lord Rais. That is until Kyle gets bitten by a zombie. Rescued by Jade, Kyle will be taken to the Tower to be treated and see first hand what’s been going on in Harran. Working with both the Tower and the GRE, Kyle will have to decide if he’s going to continue working with the GRE or go rogue himself and help the people of Harran.

I initially bought this game because even though I don’t enjoy horror games, I do like zombie games. I had already played both Dead Islands on the PS3 and this promised to be something different. Perhaps a better, more worked out version of Dead Island. Not all that different though in the end because if you’ve bashed in the head of one zombie using a wrench, which you totally have to do for a trophy this time around, it’s basically the same no matter what game you play. What this game did add though was a first person parkour to it making this this basically Mirror’s Edge with zombies. I did think the game was a decent one even though the story was a little stale and the main character was unlikeable. I found Kyle to be just as unlikeable if not more unlikable than L.A. Noire protagonist Cole Phelps. Kyle was just a guy that I couldn’t root for and by the end I really didn’t care about him.

The playability of this game was just awkward. There just something about first person parkour that just never seems to work out right. The initial button mapping was awkward and I found myself constantly falling off something, a radio tower, a bridge, a roof, you name it and I fell off of it. The only thing that worked really well in this game was the melee. Bashing in a zombie’s head or slicing off a limb with a sharp object was just glorious and a highlight of this game. The gun play on the other hand needed some work as it was basically just shooting from the hip the entire time. While this worked sometimes, it didn’t work all the time. Other than that the game suffered from some bugs and glitches, but nothing too extreme.

Graphic wise I would say that while this game was impressive in 2016, in 2019 it’s pretty lackluster. Zombies and people besides the main characters become repetitive and so did the environment in the two different area’s of this game. While they aren’t the worst graphics, the slow motion when getting a good kill was a nice touch, they aren’t the best graphics either and have not held up well at all.

There are a total of 51 trophies for the base game and another tacked on 18 trophies for the DLC. While the trophies aren’t all that difficult, they will require a major grind especially for random events and at least three other people to play with. I had the biggest problem with the Homo Homini Lupus Est trophy, which had me saving 15 survivors from Rais’s men, because this is the least likely event to spawn. This was the last trophy that I needed for the platinum and I had to play the same mission over and over again to get it. This took me around an additional 10 hours to finish the game which was not fun.

The first time I played this game, I played with some random dude who then became my random stalker. The next time I played this game was with my buddy @tjarvinen86 and I had a blast with the co-op. This game was meant to be played with other people and it’s sad that the servers for this game are kind of dead and if you want to play with people you will have to setup a gaming session. Quick shout out to my gaming session buddies Coco, Eagle, and Hitman. There’s also a “Be The Zombie” mode, but I didn’t pay attention to it.

Overall I give this game a 3 out of 5.

What’s Great:
+ The story, although a little cliched is a decent one and better than Dead Island.
+ The slow motion melee is just glorious at times, especially when you get an awesome kill on a random zombie.
+ When you can find people to play with, the co-op is pretty fun even though you’re all basically playing as Kyle Crane.

What’s Not So Great:
While in 2016 this game probably looked great, the graphics don’t really hold up to today’s standards and already look outdated. Not to mention the environments are stale and repetitive.
First person parkour games rarely work out and this is a first person parkour at it’s worst. There’s also the face that while the melee is a highlight, the gun play is not.
Kyle Crane is extremely unlikeable and it makes the game as a whole suffer because no one wants to play as a douchebag.

While this is a huge step up from Dead Island, it still wasn’t the zombie game that I was looking for. I wanted something with more story, with more depth to it, and this just didn’t have it. I feel like this game could have had so much potential, especially if it had some more RPG elements added to it. That being said, I will say that I’m pretty excited for Dying Light 2. I hope that the mistakes made in Dying Light have been rectified and Techland has learned from their mistakes. I would say that if you’re desperate for a zombie game that I would choose this over Dead Island any day. I’m not sure if you’re going to have to play Dying Light in order to understand Dying Light 2, but so far it doesn’t look like it so I would say if you want to play Dying Light 2 that you can just skip this game since you aren’t missing much.

This Week in Trophies 01-13-2019 – 01-19-2019

This week was just one of those awful weeks when it came to trophies. Just awful. I don’t know how else to describe it really. It’s one of those weeks where I didn’t even get enough trophies to warrant a blog, but here it is. The only good thing worth mentioning was that I was able to get my first platinum trophy of the year. So, let’s take a look at my pathetic trophy count for the week.

Dying Light – 71%

I did it! I finally got the platinum trophy for this game and it only took almost three years to do so! While I won’t say much about this game right now because a review is coming, I know I’m still backlogged with the reviews, but I will say that I enjoyed the game but ended up hating it by the time I was finished.

This was my in between game again this week and I made some progression on it. Unlike the other games by POWGI, this one you have to play each and every puzzle in the game to get the trophies for it so I still have a lot of puzzles to go but I’ll get to all of them eventually.

Word Search by POWGI

There you have it, a lousy 6 trophies this week. Yes, I say lousy even though one of them was a platinum trophy. Hopefully this will change in the upcoming week as I plan on playing the new episode of The Walking Dead, the new episode of DLC from Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, which has already given me some grief, and hopefully get a new trophy in WWE 2K19 because it’s PPV week! I’ll probably play some other games in between so come back next week to see how I did.

This Week in Trophies 12-30-2018 – 01-05-2019

In an effort to make gaming fun again this year, which is one of my major goals for the year, I basically played whatever I wanted to this week from my catalog of games. That being said, I had a really fun and productive week. I did all of that and still was able to get a nice amount of trophies, so let’s take a look and see what trophies I was able to get this week.

Dying Light – 65%

I busted my ass when it came to this game this week and it payed off. So I finished the story of this game, which was mediocre at best, and am now trying to get the remainder of the trophies which is turning out to be a real grind and not really that fun. I’ll give this game some more time and try to get the remainder of the trophies before calling it a day with this game whether or not I get the platinum. A big thank you to my buddy @tjarvinen86 who’s been playing this game with me even though he already has his platinum trophy.

Fallout 76 – 20%

I’ve been waiting for what feels like forever to play this game and when I finally got the chance to play, I have to say that I just fell in love with this game. Yes, it has some bugs and glitches, but it’s nothing like what other Bethesda games don’t already have in them. They’re the normal bugs and glitches that you can find in a Bethesda game so it’s not anything that’s unheard of. I like the feel of this game and I even enjoy the fact that it’s online. I have nothing bad to say about this game so far.

I’m slowly making my way through this game and I’m enjoying the time that it’s taking to play it. It’s one of those games that I play when I have some extra time and need something to do and when I get the platinum trophy for this game it’ll just happen. It’s not a game that I feel the need to rush and get the platinum.

WWE 2K19 – 88%

Yes I despise this game and it’s in no way fun, but I really want to get the PPV trophy so I’m still playing and still trying to level up as much as possible before January 23rd so that I can beat someone in the MP during the PPV and get the trophy. After that I might or might not give up depending on how many trophies I need to finish the game. Other than that I think this game is horrible and will be the last WWE game that I ever buy.

WWE 2K19

Youtubers Life – 11%

I picked this game up on a whim because it looked like The Sims, but instead I got to make YouTube video’s for a living, like I try to do now just more successfully. So far I’m having a really great time playing. There as a little hitch that took place when I first started playing that didn’t allow me to level up and although I lost some time playing when the game did this because I had to re-start, things seem to be working now and I’m OK with that at the moment.

Word Search By POWGI (PS Vita) – 70%

I was able to get one trophy for this game this week as I played some PS Vita while watching something so boring on TV that I don’t even remember what I was watching. I expect this number to go up as I watch a little more TV this week than I did the previous week and while I watch I’ll probably be playing this game.

Now for the big drum roll because my total trophies for the week was 40. Not a bad haul when it comes to trophies. I had a lot of fun playing video games this week which hasn’t been happening as of late and I’ve been having an absolute blast streaming for fun. Who knew that any of this could be fun. Anyway, I’m going to continue on the same path for this upcoming week as I play some more Dying Light, if anyone is interested in playing this game with me I have a gaming session set up on PSNProfiles.com, some more Fallout 76, and some more Youtubers Life. I’ll probably play some other stuff and I’ll let you know how everything went next week.

This Week in Trophies 12-23-2018 – 12-29-2018

This was an OK week when it came to gaming. I’ve keep my promise of not starting any new games until the new year and it’s kind of making me miserable as I play some games that I just don’t like. This last full week of the year has seemed more like a chore than anything else and I’ll be happy when the year is over and I can unveil my brand new goal for next year that will make gaming feel like less of a chore. Anyway, onto the trophies.

Dying Light – 36%

I’m really glad my buddy @tjarvinen86 pushed me to play this game again because I’m having a great time doing so. I think that when I first started playing it, there were a lot of reasons that I don’t want to get into that made me stop. Mostly other people, but I found that playing this game again is fun and I really missed out so I’m enjoying my time as I play this again.

Gems of War – 72%

As you might have guessed, I stopped playing this game a long time ago, but I kept my guild open. At the urging of a fellow guild member, I had to log in in order to kick someone from the guild. This prompted me to use a few keys that I had to open some chests and it popped a trophy. All that just to kick out an inactive guild member. And no, the member was not me.

I used this game as my chill out game this week because with the holidays this week has been stressful. I like to play this game because I can shut off the background music put on my headphone and listen to some music that I want to listen to and just not have to think. It’s a relaxing little thing and it beats the next game which has made my life a living hell.

WWE 2K19 – 79%

This is the last WWE game that I will ever get as this game is such a piece of crap. I absolutely hate this game, but I continue to play because I want to be able to get whatever trophies I can now and just be done with this game. It’s such a chore to play and it’s not even fun to play online. That being said I am only 6 trophies away from the platinum trophy and at this point I really don’t care if I get it or not, I’m just trying to finish up the multiplayer trophies and be done with this game. Oh and a huge shout out to CHRISTONTHEGOD who called me a fucking bitch when I beat him because he was too busy showboating outside of the ring that when he tried to get back in I punched him in the face and he fell to the ground for the count out. I swear the community for this game is extremely toxic and I’ve been called so many things in so many languages that I’ve just about had it. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose, but if you’re going to lose at least do it with some dignity.

There you have it the final full week of the year with a total of 35 trophies. I’m pretty happy with this amount of trophies for my final full week of the year. I am so look forward to this upcoming week as I continue some games and start some other games that I’ve been waiting to start for a while now. I’ll let you know how everything went and what I decided to start playing next week. That being said I hope that everyone has a happy and safe new year. I want to thank you guys for reading and commenting, I couldn’t ask for a better blogging community as I have a ton of fun interacting with all of you. You guys are awesome!

These Past Three Weeks in Trophies 12-02-2018 – 12-22-2018

As you might have already known, it’s been three whole weeks since I posted a trophy blog. I’ve basically been sick these past three weeks with a really bad case of bronchitis that also turned into a really bad ear infection, which caused me to miss a bunch of work, then work while I was sick and miserable because everyone is just miserable when they’re sick and who really wants to work, and it caused me to miss a lot of blogging and a lot of gaming. I am feeling a little better as the bronchitis starts to go away and the ear infection has basically cleared up, so why not start blogging again. Anyway, here’s a breakdown of the trophies I was able to get within the past three weeks.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey – 82%

I finally got the platinum trophy for this game! Which means that I can’t say anything about this game here, and my reviews are really backed up so it’s going to be a while before I can actually tell you guys what I thought about the game. I will say that for the first time ever, I did actually buy the DLC for this game and even finished that, so I also can’t talk about that here. I promise that the new year will be filled with reviews though.

Thanks to my buddy @tjarvinen86, I was able to get some trophies for this game within these past three weeks. I want to say a big thank you to him for playing this game with me while I was sick because I was really sick and he had to hear all of my coughing and sneezing and all that other gross stuff over the microphone, but he stuck with me and helped me progress in this game.

GWENT: The Witcher Card Game – 18%

I’ve been wanting to play this game for a while and when I seen that this game finally had trophies, I downloaded it for free and started playing. Thanks to this game I was able to get my 9,000th trophy which was a huge milestone for me. I have to say though that I’m really enjoying this game and I really like playing when I get the chance to do so.

WWE 2K19 – 35%

This is the first WWE game that I’ve played in a really long time, I bought it on sale during the holiday sale time and decided to play it. It’s also my first 2K WWE game and I have to say that from what I’ve played in the past, this feels like a huge downgrade. I’m really not enjoying this game and it feels like an absolute chore to play. I like to call this my angry game because it either makes me angry when I play or I play it when I’m feeling angry for whatever reason.

Tomb Raider – 55%

Here’s a blast from the past because the last time I played this game on the PS3 was when it was released. I played this game when my buddy @tjarvinen86 needed some MP trophies that I also needed. Another big thank you to him for playing this game with me because I was so sick when we played and he had to endure all of my sickness.

There you have it, three weeks, a total of 53 trophies, a new platinum trophy, and a milestone 9,000th trophy. Not bad for being sick and taking breaks between sleeping, working, and being miserable in order to game. For the upcoming week, I plan to continue to play some more GWENT, WWE 2K19 so that I can finish it up, and some other games that I have left unfinished because I refuse to start a new game until the new year. I’ll let you know how things worked out for me next week.

This Week in Trophies 11-18-2018 – 11-24-2018

This week has been pretty good. I made a lot of progress on some games that I’ve been playing and some progress on some games that were just sitting in the backlog list just waiting to be played. While I didn’t finish anything this week, I was happy at what I was able to get so let’s take a look at the trophies that I got this week.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey – 53%

I have officially finished this game, meaning that the story for this game is done. I’m not done with this game though because I’m having way too much fun exploring Ancient Greece and there’s still a bunch to do. I have to say though story wise, that I think this is the best Assassin’s Creed game hands down. I loved how the game ended and I’m excited to see where the franchise goes next.

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel – 95%

It’s been three whole years since this game has been on my blog and it’s all because of @tjarvinen86. After he got his Borderlands 2 platinum, he went back to this game so naturally I also went back to this game and we’ve been just getting as many trophies as possible and are both pretty close to getting the platinum trophy. This is some exciting stuff since I really didn’t expect to ever get this platinum trophy.

Dying Light – 23%

Another game I never expected to finish or even play again, but when @tjarvinen86 offered me some help with the game, I couldn’t turn down the chance of adding another platinum trophy to my list and getting another game finished. So far I’ve restarted my story since I have no idea where I was before or what I was doing, and it’s coming along nicely. I got some trophies out of the way and now have a bunch of random ones and story ones to go. We’ll see how it goes.

Dying LightDying LightDying Light

While I was only able to get 22 trophies this week, I feel like I made a lot of progress. I finished a game that I’ve been playing and streaming for over 70 hours now and I went back to two old games and finally started playing them again. I would call that a successful week. For the upcoming week I plan on trying not to start a bunch of games that I got on sale during the holiday time and concentrate on finishing up Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, and Dying Light. I’ll let you know how things turn out next week.

This Week in Trophies 04-17-2016 – 04-23-2016

Although I kind of planned for a laid back type of week, it was anything but that. Not only did I have some crazy scheduling issues due to “miscommunication” which lead to a sit down with the second in command, which then lead to me being told I wasn’t “part of the team”, it seemed my only solace this week was gaming and I hit it pretty hard. Not only did I get two platinum trophies this week, you totally read that right, two, but I also hit my milestone 6,000th trophy. So while life was crazy, gaming was not. Take a look at my full gaming week.

Mass Effect – 63%

I spent half my day Sunday playing Mass Effect, since the other half I was talked into playing Dying Light with someone. I’m still really enjoying my current Mass Effect playthrough. I’ve done all of the side missions that were on my list and completed one main story mission on Feros. From there I’ve moved onto another story mission which will most likely be finished up soon before moving onto some more side missions or another story mission.

Dying Light – 20%

I have to say that after getting into this game a little bit more, I started to really enjoy it. I’m enjoying the time I spend playing whether it’s with someone or just going it alone, since apparently I’m not fit out to be “part of a team”. Anyway, I would say that I’m about…1/4 way through the story since I keep getting side tracked with the side missions and the safe zones and all the other things there are to do in Dying Light. I will say that this game is pretty massive and I’m kind of impressed by its size. I look forward to continuing to play.

Arcade Game Series: Ms. Pac-Man – 100%

My first platinum trophy this week. As you all probably already know, there were four different arcade game series games released this week and I picked up three of them including Ms. Pac-Man, Pac-Man, and Dig Dug since I’m not a fan of Galaga. It was nice to play this old classic once more and I’ll have my full review for the game in the upcoming weeks.

You can’t have Ms. Pac-Man without Pac-Man right? Of course after I finished playing Ms. Pac-Man I just had to play Pac-Man and I of course had to get my second platinum trophy of the week. Although I enjoyed my time playing this game a little bit more than I did with Ms. Pac-Man, you’ll have to wait for my full review to read about my overall experience with the game.

After playing Pac-Man, I basically said what the hell and started playing Dig Dug since it was the last Arcade Game Series that I had. I was so close to getting the platinum with only two trophies away, but I just couldn’t do it. I’ll definitely be finishing this game up soon and adding another platinum trophy to my list.

What a week right? Compared to my other weeks, this one kind of takes the cake which was surprising since I had an overall shitty week with just life in general. Now for what’s in store for this upcoming week. More Mass Effect, that’s a given at this point since I’ve been looking forward to it, finishing up Dig Dug, playing more Dying Light, and trying to get the last episode of The Walking Dead: Michonne in during this time. I say trying to get this episode in because I have my second tattoo appointment this week, which I’m totally excited about. I’ve made a couple of changes since my last tattoo appointment and not only will I tell you about it in the upcoming weeks, but as always I’ll let you know how my gaming week went next week.

This Week in Trophies 04-10-2016 – 04-16-2016

Unfortunately it was one of those weeks where life got in the way of my gaming, damn you life, but I did manage to get a couple of trophies. I also managed to start a new game as well in between all the chaos. Keep reading to see what new game I played this week along with the trophies that I was able to get.

Mass Effect – 62%

Although I’m not getting a hell of a lot of trophies from this game, I am enjoying my Sunday’s spent playing. It’s been like meeting up with an old friend once a week and catching up and I think sometimes you just need this. So basically I’ve only done the one main mission where you recruit Liara after leaving the Citadel and I’ve finished up all side missions that involve me actually doing something, not looking for random junk. I have two squad mate requests to take care of before moving on to one of the main missions.

Dying Light – 7%

This is the game that I started this week. Surprised? I was in a mood for a Zombie game and I’m not really into the free one that was released for the PS4 thanks to PS+, so I decided to start this one. I’m on the fence about this one so far, maybe because up until yesterday after a random person decided to help me out, I kept dying every five seconds and it was becoming old really fast. By that time I was kind of thinking that I should have just went back to playing Dead Island and finish that series up on the PS3, but I’m going to keep giving this one a try hoping that something changes my mind.

Dying Light Dying LightDying Light Dying LightDying Light Dying LightDying Light

So yeah…that was it. This week I plan to game as much as possible because the following week is going to be absolutely crazy for me. So what’s on the agenda? More Mass Effect for my Sunday and more Dying Light throughout the rest of the week. Maybe even a few random games in between as I try to clean up some more of my backlog with May being such a big gaming month. I’ll let you know how things went next week.
