Far Cry 5 Review

Far Cry 5

This game was a day one buy for me because I have this love/hate relationship with Far Cry games, just like everyone else who plays this series. What made it a day one buy though wasn’t the franchise, but the new take on the franchise that usually puts you in the shoes of some random dude going to a different country and finding himself in whole mess of a situation. This game promised to be different though as it took things “home” for us Americans who play. This intrigued me, not because of the location, but because I wanted to know how the Far Cry franchise could possibly pull off what they normally do in the US and how were they going to do it. It took me a while to get through this game and because I finally have the platinum, it’s time for a review.

In Far Cry 5 you first of all get to finally choose the gender of your character! I know this isn’t a big deal because it’s a first person shooter and all you see is a hand waving around in front of you, but it’s a big progress for this franchise which has been an absolute sausage fest before this. Anyway, you’ll play as the unnamed Junior Deputy of Hope County, Montana and go on a mission with the Deputy Marshall, the Sherriff of Hope County, and some other deputies in order to arrest and bring in Joseph Seed. What did Joseph Seed do to warrant all of this attention? Well he kind of formed this military based cult because God had chosen him as the savior and he was going to save the county from it’s inevitable collapse. The initial arrest goes smoothly as Joseph cryptically warns you that God will not allow him to be taken. What could possibly go wrong though? Oh I don’t know, the helicopter you’re taking him in on could crash and you can find out that people you thought were working with you were working against you and now it’s just you who has to do everything like rescue the Marshall, rescue the sheriff, and rescue your other deputies. Not to mention this new unknown, unnamed deputy has to take down an entire cult.

I really enjoyed the main story aspect of this game. It felt different than the Far Cry’s that came out before it. I liked how it brought the normal Far Cry things into the mix, like liberating outposts, and helping out random people, but still gave the franchise an overhaul story wise. Basically in the past you’ve had to take down resistances in other countries, but now you were taking down an entire cult of just brainwashed people. I even liked how in the end you ended up feeling like the bad guy no matter what you choose. Was Joseph Seed right this whole time? Were the followers, basically his family, that you had to take down also right? The game made you question a lot and I like games that do that. They put you in the shoes of someone who’s supposed to be the good guy, but maybe you’re the bad guy. You really don’t know as the black and white morality lines are blurred in this game and are kind of grey. That was one of the best parts for me because when I initially finished this game, I had to sit there and think about what I had done throughout the whole game and if I made the right choices or if I made the wrong ones. Games that do this, games that put you in this moral grey areas are the games are the ones that are actually great because they make you think. Don’t get me wrong, I do love those brainless games that you can just run around and do random things, but it’s games like this that are just genius.

The playability of this game was your typical Far Cry game and even though the plot and setting changed, it was nice to see that the playability didn’t change. Some of the more annoying aspects of Far Cry were taken out and replaced with some new annoying aspects, like the Clutch Nixon missions, but for the most part the game remained the same. There were still random people to help, outposts to liberate, and collectibles to be found. What was good about this though was that not everything had to be done in order to be able to enjoy the game fully. You could do about half of these things and still have a good feel for the game. The most important part though was that even though Far Cry 5 was an overhaul from the previous games that it still felt like a Far Cry game and it did.

Graphically this game was just beautiful. Montana was a great setting for this game and it was a treat to drive through the open country and explore this huge map. Everything down to the tiniest detail was beautifully crafted and a huge kudos goes out to the Ubisoft art department for this game. Not to mention that each and every main character, not the side characters like the random people of Hope County, but the characters who really mattered looked amazing. They looked like actual real people and I’m in no way a graphics person, but I was blown away by how real everything looked. It was really amazing and just added to the overall game.

Trophies, trophies, trophies. There are a total of 51 trophies for the main game. Even more are being added as DLC is added into this game, but I’m not really concerned about the DLC for this game since I never play any Far Cry DLC. Anyway, the 51 main trophies are your basic Far Cry trophies. You get trophies for doing the main missions, side missions, liberating outposts, helping people, and of course there are some stupid trophies thrown in there because they’re fun to do and funny to see. This game unfortunately sees the return of multiplayer trophies, but we’ll get to that in a moment. I have to say that my favorite trophy out of this whole list had to be the “Where’s the Beef?” trophy. This is a throwback to an old 80’s commercial, but what you have to do to get it and how you get it is probably the funniest thing in this pretty serious game.

Now onto the multiplayer. Unfortunately, Far Cry 5 did not learn from Far Cry 4 when it came to the multiplayer. I thought that maybe Far Cry 5 wouldn’t have multiplayer since Far Cry Primal did better without it but because the whole franchise was being revamped this meant the multiplayer was being revamped as well. What the multiplayer basically turned into was an “arcade mode.” This meant that you could do the multiplayer single player, co-op, or with a group of people on either maps that were created by Ubisoft or the Ubisoft community meaning that a lot of the maps are just plain crap. So think, user generated Little Big Planet content brought into the Far Cry universe and that’s what you get for the user created content of the Far Cry 5 arcade mode. This mode is not great and it really put a damper on the game as a whole because if you want to get the platinum trophy for this game be ready for one hell of a grind.

Special Thanks! A special thanks goes out to my buddy TJ. I had seriously given up on getting the platinum for this game because I was suffering from what we like to joke about as Far Cry fatigue. I had spent so much time playing this game when it came out and was so close to getting the platinum, but just couldn’t grind out those last 13 trophies that I needed. When this game finally went on sale for him though, he immediately bought it and helped me grind out those trophies that I needed so that we could both get the platinum for this game. Without him this review would have never been possible so a huge thank you goes out to him. I have to say that playing with someone else really made this game more fun as we basically just acted like a bunch of jackasses and had a great time playing. So thank you TJ, my 89th platinum would have never happened without you!

Overall I give this game a 4 out of 5.

What’s Great:
+ A total re-vamp of the Far Cry franchise really paid off and the story was just amazing and captivating for this game. It’s a story that makes you think and puts you in that grey area of right and wrong.
+ The more annoying aspects of the Far Cry franchise were taken out and not everything you usually have to do in order to get the full Far Cry experience were necessary to do but you were still able to get the full Far Cry experience.
+ The graphics for this game were off the charts and were just amazing. Everything looked beautiful and graphically this is one of the better games that I’ve played recently. Even the main characters of this game looked extremely real and this was a bonus for this game.

What’s Not So Great:
Multiplayer is back and worse than ever with user generated content making this more like Far Cry 5 – Little Big Planet Edition.
Even though some of the more annoying aspects of the Far Cry franchise were taken out, they were replaced with some new annoying aspects that have to be done in order to get all of the trophies. Sometimes you can’t have everything.

Overall this was a really great game and one of the better additions to the Far Cry franchise. If you could overlook the multiplayer side of this game with the user generated content and some of the more annoying missions, then this game will just blow you away. It has a great story, characters that act and feel real, great graphics, and overall a great playability that had no bugs or glitches. If you’re a fan of the Far Cry franchise I think that this will be the game for you as it takes the Far Cry formula and revamps it for the better. If you’re not a fan of the Far Cry franchise, I would say that this is a great starting point and that it might just get you into the Far Cry franchise. Either way this is one of those games that shouldn’t be missed.

This Week in Trophies 07-15-2018 – 07-21-2018

While I still did my normal life routine, I think it’s horrible when being an adult becomes so routine that you actually have to call it a routine, I actually found a lot of time to game this week and actually get a pretty decent amount of trophies that I can finally gush about instead of telling you about my sad 6-7 trophies that I get a week. Let’s get right into it though and see what trophies I was able to get this week.

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate – 22%

I’m having a really fun time playing this game and streaming it, mostly because when I stream @tjarvinen86 shows up and he just makes streaming that much more fun. This is to anyone else that watches my streams, while I don’t actually talk on my streams, I do interact with people in the chat area so make sure to stop by and chat with me because I’m always watching the chat, I don’t use the voice option during my stream because I make Let’s Play video’s out of my streams, but please feel free to come and chat with me during my streams. I’m always happy to interact with you guys. Anyway, I really like this Assassin’s Creed and I’m finding it more enjoyable then previous ones. There’s a lot to do and I’m happy doing it.

Fallout Shelter – 54%

I would be having a more fun time with this game if it wouldn’t randomly crash my system after shutting it off. Right now I just want to finish this game and be done with it so it doesn’t end up ruining my system of my 8TB external hard drive. Here’s hoping that I can finish this game up within a few more weeks.

Far Cry 5 – 72%

Haven’t seen this game on my list in a while right? That’s because I’ve been waiting for a certain someone to get this game and hold up on his end of a promise. Well Mr. @tjarvinen86 totally came through for me this week and not only got the platinum for himself but helped me get the platinum as well. I won’t say much more about this game here, but you can catch my full review of the game on Wednesday.

Hot Shots Tennis – 14%

This is one of those rare PS2 games that I never got the chance to play, I played a lot of Hot Shots Golf, but never Tennis. I love Tennis and I love this goofy little series so I decided to give this game a try. So far I’m liking the PS2 feel to it, it also helped that this game was on sale and I got it at a good price. I’ll continue to play, but I’m not sure how far I’ll get trophy wise. It’s a nice distraction type of game though.

So are you ready for it? My final trophy count for the week? 24! That’s right! 24 new trophies this week including a platinum trophy which I haven’t gotten in months! Months! I’m excited and hopefully can keep this trend up. We’ll see though as today starts a new day and who knows how next week will go. Anyway, as always I’ll be back next week letting you know how I did with my weekly trophy round up.

This Week in Trophies 04-22-2018 – 04-28-2018

This week wasn’t a bad week when it came to trophies. I was able to game a decent amount of them even though I had a bunch of things going on with work. I guess the good news is that I didn’t get fired like I thought I was, but there is also an underlying bad news in there as well because now I just hate my job. The feeling is horrible and It’s gotten to the point where I spend a lot of time job searching and a lot of time thinking of reasons to call in sick. Anyway, here’s a breakdown of my trophies for the week.

Far Cry 5 – 80%

I finally finished this game and that was a pretty big accomplishment. The ending just blew my mind and I was left thinking about it for a while. I’m not even sure I picked the right ending at this point. Anyway, I enjoyed the story as a whole and now just have to go back and finish up some random things. I also have to play the multiplayer which I hate. I’m also looking for a co-op partner so if you’re looking for a co-op partner let me know down in the comments section below and we can set up a gaming session.

God of War – 20%

I’m not really concentrating on the trophies for this game and I’m enjoying it a lot. I love the story, I love the new combat, I just love everything about this game. It’s truly an amazing experience that breathe’s new life into a series that was going stale. I’m happy right now to just play through the whole story and finish up the trophies at a later time.

Q*bert: Rebooted – 19%

I don’t know if I play this game to try and relax a little or just get annoyed. It’s a mixture of both. Kind of like playing Sound Shapes on death mode. It’s frustrating but also relaxing at the same time if that makes sense.

Q*bert: Rebooted

That was it for this week, a total of 15 trophies. Not bad, not good either, but it’s decent. Next week kind of looks like it will be more of the same but I’m hoping to get the platinum in Far Cry 5 while I continue to play some God of War. I’ll let you know how everything turns out next week.

This Week in Trophies 04-15-2018 – 04-21-2018

This past week was another hectic one as I tried to start my week off right, but had to bring my dad back to the hospital for an pneumonia that was caught early. About five hours later the hospital fiasco was over and I was dead tired and didn’t even touch my game. The rest of the week as normal as it could possible get and even though I gamed a little bit, I just didn’t game all that much. Hopefully this week will change, but I’m not so sure. Then there was my job which was just total bullshit this week and may result in me not having a job come Monday. Before I get into my trophies this is how it went, I did my normal job at work, got yelled at for it and then got a nasty email from the boss to stress his point again. Getting pissed off myself, I wrote a pretty nasty email back in response and I haven’t been at work to see if the email saga has continued. Anyway, I’m at the point of being tired with my job and the drama that goes with it and it’s time to talk about trophies.

Far Cry 5 – 64%

I’m just about done with this game and I’ve enjoyed my time playing it. I’ll still have to go back and do a trophy cleanup which shouldn’t be that hard, at least I hope not, but I’m eager to see how this game ends. It’s been one hell of a journey and right now I think I’m safe to say that this was much better than Far Cry 4 and Far Cry Primal and right up there with Far Cry 3. We’ll see though because it might have a crap ending that ruins the whole game.

Far Cry 5Far Cry 5Far Cry 5Far Cry 5Far Cry 5Far Cry 5Far Cry 5

God of War – 7%

Here is something that you almost never hear me say. I am loving this game so much that I don’t even care about the trophies right now. WHAT??? I know right? Anyway, this is most definitely the best God of War game this series has seen in a long time and it has really revitalized this series and brought it into a new age. This game has so many improvements, not only visually, but also mechanically that it’s like a new game all together. It’s just amazing and I can’t wait to continue my journey.

God of WarGod of WarGod of WarGod of WarGod of War

So a total of 12 trophies for the week, which is kid of weak, but it’s been one of those weeks. How will this upcoming week go? I really have no idea. All I know is that if I don’t have a job come Monday then my trophy count for the week should spike and if I do still have a job it’ll probably be around the same figure, but at least I’ll have a job. Anyway, I’ll let you know how things work out next week.

Tentative Streaming Schedule for the Week of 04-22-2018 – 04-28-2018

It’s been a while since I’ve been able to make a streaming schedule, but I’m glad to say that I’m back and I can basically lock down some days and times that I can stream now that my dad is doing a little better. Anyway, as always this schedule may change so make sure to follow me on Twitter for updates. Possible changes may be that I might be able to stream more depending on if I have a job come Monday. Stuff like that.

1:00 pm – 4:00 pm – God of War
5:00 pm – 7:30 pm – Far Cry 5

6:00 pm – 9:00 pm – God of War

6:00 pm – 8:00 pm – Far Cry 5

6:00 pm – 8:00 pm – God of War

6:00 pm – 8:00 pm – Far Cry 5

1:00 pm – 4:00 pm – God of War
6:00 pm – 8:00 pm – Far Cry 5

1:00 pm – 4:00 pm – God of War
6:00 pm – 8:00 pm – Far Cry 5

Remember all of my times are eastern and they may change at the drop of a hat which is why you should totally follow me on Twitter for my latest updates. Like I said this schedule will majorly change depending on my job status come Monday.

I am always looking for suggestions on what you want to see me stream. I’m even open to doing a co-op stream if anyone is interested let me know and we can set something up. Also, if you miss any of my streams, you can always catch them later on as I post them to YouTube within a few days.

This Couple of Weeks in Trophies 04-01-2018 – 04-14-2018

This month did not start off right for me at all and it completely sucks. Last Thursday my dad was rushed to the ER and I found out that he had two blood cloths in his lungs that had to be taken care of ASAP. This meant an emergency Cath lab procedure in the middle of the night along with a pretty long stay in the ICU. This meant not only no sleep, but it meant no gaming either. After a really long few days, he started to improve to the point where he was able to come home a few days ago. For me, family comes first so during this time I streamed once when I had some extra time, I have no idea how this happened because between going back and forth to the hospital I also had to work. Like I said, it hasn’t been the easiest month, but I am back now and I have gamed, not as much as I wanted to, but it’s still something and I was able to get some trophies so let’s take a look at them.

Far Cry 5 – 50%

I am completely in love with this game. I love everything about it, talking about the single player only, the mission, the story, the areas, the graphics, and so much more. I think that this is probably the best Far Cry game since Far Cry 3. That being said, I thought we had broken away from the tacked on Multiplayer, but we haven’t and I hate it. It just sucks. Anyone who has played this game also has to know this. If you can find something great about the multiplayer, let me know down in the comments section below.

Q*Bert: Rebooted – 14%

I’ve been wanting to play this game for a while, but I didn’t want to pay for it. Thanks to PS+, this game is free for the month so if you’re like me and you’ve wanted to play it but haven’t, make sure to pick it up. Anyway, I played this game when I had some short bursts of time and I wanted to just get away from all of the stress and stuff that I was going through. Why I picked this game, I have no idea because I could have seriously thrown my controller through the window. That being said, I kind of like this game even with all the frustration.

Q*bert: RebootedQ*bert: Rebooted

And that was it for the trophies. A total of 16 trophies in two weeks. Not really the best showing and hopefully with my dad out of the hospital and doing better, this number will increase this upcoming week. I doubt I’ll be able to finish Far Cry 5 before God of War comes out, but that doesn’t mean I won’t try. Anyway, for this upcoming week I’ll continue to play Far Cry 5, a little Q*Bert: Rebooted on the side, and definitely play some God of War. I’ll let you know how things turn out next week.

This Week in Trophies 03-25-2018 – 03-31-2018

This was a pretty exciting week in trophies, compared to last week. I was able to get a bunch of them. Nowhere near a normal amount that I would have gotten years ago, but still a decent amount for having to be an adult for most of the week. Anyway, onto the trophies.

Batman: The Enemy Within – 100%

The last episode for this game came out this week and I was able to play it before the week was over. I’ll have my full review up Wednesday so until then I’ll be keeping quiet on what I thought about the game.

Batman: The Enemy WithinBatman: The Enemy WithinBatman: The Enemy WithinBatman: The Enemy WithinBatman: The Enemy WithinBatman: The Enemy WithinBatman: The Enemy Within

Far Cry 5 – 20%

I started this game this week and so far I am just loving it. I love basically everything about it and spend almost all of my time playing and streaming it. I’m have a really fun time at the moment, even though I haven’t even past the first full story line for this game, but I’m going to continue on because it looks like this game can only get better at the moment.

The Sims 4 – 47%

So I had to play something while I waited patiently for Far Cry 5 to come out and figured that I might as well play The Sims. I was able to get a couple of trophies for this game as I basically now use my Sims as little worker ants who’s main goals are to reproduce in order to keep their family line going for 26 generations and advance in all of the careers and skills. Fun times.

The Sims 4The Sims 4The Sims 4The Sims 4

There you have it, a total of 23 trophies this week. Much better than last week and not a bad way to end the month. I’m looking forward to continue to play Far Cry 5 this upcoming week, continue to get trophies in that game and other than that I think that’s it. There might be another game or two pop in there and if there is I’ll let you know next week.

Tentative Streaming Schedule for the Week of 04-01-2018 – 04-07-2018

I have to say that I did really good sticking to my schedule last week. Mostly because Far Cry 5 is just an awesome game with a bunch of stuff to do so it was easy to stick to my streaming schedule. That being said, take a look at my schedule below to see when I’ll be streaming this upcoming week.

12:00 pm – 4:00 pm – Far Cry 5

6:00 pm – 8:00 pm – Far Cry 5

6:00 pm – 8:00 pm – Far Cry 5

6:00 pm – 8:00 pm – Far Cry 5

6:00 pm – 8:00 pm – Far Cry 5

6:00 pm – 8:00 pm – Far Cry 5

That’s my schedule for the week, as you can see a lot of Far Cry 5. It usually takes me about a week to finish this game series, but my schedule is completely crazy and this is basically all the time I have to game. Anyway, I’ll continue to play until the game is finished.

I am always looking for suggestions on what you want to see me stream. I’m even open to doing a co-op stream if anyone is interested let me know and we can set something up. Also, if you miss any of my streams, you can always catch them later on as I post them to YouTube within a few days.

Tentative Streaming Schedule for the Week of 03-25-2018 – 03-31-2018

It’s been well over a month since I was able to actually sit down and stream, but I’m finally able to and I’ll be doing so most of this upcoming week. While my schedule is always tentative, take a look at what I have planned for the upcoming week.

6:00 pm – 8:00 pm – Far Cry 5

6:00 pm – 8:00 pm – Far Cry 5

6:00 pm – 8:00 pm – Far Cry 5

6:00 pm – 8:00 pm – Far Cry 5

6:00 pm – 8:00 pm – Far Cry 5

As you can see, I plan on playing a lot of Far Cry 5. Remember all of my times are in eastern and I’m really exited to start streaming again so I hope you’ll join me and watch as I probably do what I do best and that’s die a lot in video games. Or maybe this time I’ll be a total badass in Far Cry 5, who knows. You’ll have to watch to find out.

I am always looking for suggestions on what you want to see me stream. I’m even open to doing a co-op stream if anyone is interested let me know and we can set something up. Also, if you miss any of my streams, you can always catch them later on as I post them to YouTube within a few days.
