King Oddball Review (PS4)

King Oddball

I’ve had my eye on this game for a long time now, but it was one of those games that I could never justify the purchase price so I always skipped buying it even when it was on sale. It just so happens that about a month ago, this was a free PS+ game which made it the perfect opportunity for me to finally download this game and check it out. After a month of playing I was finally able to complete it, so that means it’s time for a review.

King Oddball is about this King who just happens to be a ball and happens to appear in the sky one day with the sole purpose of taking over the world. He’s kind of like Brain from Pinky and the Brain. Anyone remember that? No? Just me? Moving on then, in order to do this he’ll have to throw rocks at various different tanks and troops on the ground to defeat them in this Angry Birds type of game. Will King Oddball succeed and take over the world? If you know what you’re doing he will and don’t get so frustrated that you break your controller. Not to worry though if you can’t get through it there are a bunch of different levels to play and a whole secret world.

I thought this game was ok. It wasn’t the best game to come from 10 tons, it also wasn’t the worst so that has to count for something. After a while the game gets a little repetitive as each level blends into the one before it and it just seems like this never ending game. Sometimes that’s not a bad thing, and sometimes it’s a really bad thing. In this case it kind of falls in the middle. When you’re on a winning streak you want to keep playing, but when you’re on this losing streak and you’ve tried to beat one level over 20 times in a row and have failed, you want to crush your controller into a million little pieces. The extra levels where you had to do specific things with a specific number of rocks was fun and interesting and the secret world was just the basic world reversed so it was like playing the whole game over again after you just beat it. This got to be a little more frustrating and ended up leaving a bad taste in my mouth once I finally beat the game.

The playability of this game was interesting. While everything worked as it should and there were no game breaking bugs of glitches to report of, there was no way to actually judge how you were going to throw a rock. The thing is King Oddball is just a big rock in the sky so he has to use his tongue to pick up rocks and fling them at the troops, well I wasn’t able to find a way to adjust his tongue and each time you started a level the amount of tongue that was sticking out was different. Sometimes it was too much and it would mess up a whole level and sometimes it was too little and that would mess up the whole level as well. There was never this balance and it felt like you weren’t in control a lot of the time. You were just pressing X when you thought that maybe you had a chance of hitting something. This was probably the most frustrating part of the game and it made it just a little bit less enjoyable.

I felt that the graphics for this game were simple, but not in a good way. The background graphics were supposed to be this artsy looking painting type thing, but it just made the game look pixelated and blurry while the main graphics were just weird looking. The tanks and troops had some detail to them as well as King Oddball, but the obstacles that were used throughout the game really didn’t bring that much in the graphics department.

There were a total of 16 trophies for this game. No platinum, but after playing this game you will certainly think that you deserve a platinum after beating this game. Not because it’s difficult, but because of the amount of time that it takes to actually play the game. None of the trophies are hard and they’re actually pretty easy to get, it’s just the time it takes to get them that will get you. If you’re the dedicated trophy hunter type, you’ll try your hardest to get them and if you’re not much of a trophy hunter you’ll probably play the game once before putting it away.

While there is no multiplayer for this game, this is a great couch co-op game because when you get frustrated because you can’t beat a level you can hand the controller off to your unsuspecting victim, I mean your friend, and let them give it a go. So while this wasn’t meant to be a multiplayer or co-op game you can certainly make it into one and share the burden of getting all of the trophies and beating all of the levels with someone who is willing to sit with you and play.

Overall I give this game a 2.5 out of 5.

What’s Great:
+ It’s a different take on Angry Birds and kind of opens the door to the other 10 tons games that are similar like Tennis in the Face and Baseball Riot.
+ There are a bunch of different levels to complete and hours upon hours of gametime with this game so you’ll have a lot to do.

What’s Not So Great:
There are a lot of things to do with this game and it quickly becomes too tedious and boring because after a while the levels just blend together even if they offer a challenge.
Beating some of the levels are just pure luck no matter how good you are at this game and that doesn’t really work all that well.
The graphics aren’t really that impressive and could use some work.

If you picked this game up for free thanks to PS+, I would say to give it a try because you have nothing to lose but your sanity. If you missed this one, then I would say to skip it because my first impression of this game was correct and it’s really not worth the $4.99 that the game is currently selling for.

This Week in Trophies 06-10-2018 – 06-16-2018

This was an interesting week, but then again, aren’t they all? Anyway, I was able to accomplish one of my goals, which was to complete King Oddball, but I’m still working on Detroit: Become Human because playing through this game again is really taking a long time. Mostly because of my work schedule and partly because I’m trying to play a bunch of other games with it. Anyway, onto my trophies for the week.

Fallout Shelter – 9%

So I kind of called it last week when I said that this game would be released the night of the Bethesda conference and I was right. Since then I’ve been playing this game like crazy, and I didn’t really think that I would spend so much time playing, but I’m having a good time playing so at least that’s a good thing.

Fallout ShelterFallout ShelterFallout ShelterFallout ShelterFallout Shelter

King Oddball – 100%

This was one of my goals this week and I’m just glad I was able to accomplish it. I won’t say much about this game right now so you’ll have to wait until Wednesday to see my full review of the game.

King Oddball

Unravel TWO – 10%

I played this game on Sunday and that was basically the last time I played this game. It’s not from lack of not wanting to play it because I do and I love the story that it’s telling, it’s just from the lack of time. I will try to find some more time this week to play as my schedule should return to something of a normal schedule for me.

Unravel TWOUnravel TWOUnravel TWOUnravel TWO

And there you have it, a total of 10 trophies for this week. Not as impressive as the past few weeks, but at least it’s something. My plan for this week is to continue to work on Detroit: Become Human because I really want that platinum trophy now, try to get in some playtime with Unravel Two, and continue to play Fallout Shelter. I don’t think I’ll play anything new, but you never know and I’ll let you know how things turn out next week.

This Week in Trophies 06-03-2018 – 06-09-2018

This was a pretty interesting week in trophies for me, I got a bunch of Detroit: Become Human trophies, but still didn’t get the platinum, I also started a new game which I had no intention of doing, but it couldn’t be helped, and I’m one step closer to finishing King Oddball. That was with a bunch of life stuff going on so I’m pretty proud of myself. Check out which trophies I was actually able to get down below.

Detroit: Become Human – 79%

I’m so close to the platinum trophy for this game that I can taste it. I have to do two more playthroughs of this game and get them right before I can get it, but I’m up for the task and I’ll work on doing that this week. Other that, I went back and cleaned up a bunch of trophies this week and am not really that upset that I’ll have to do two more playthroughs since I don’t feel like it will be a hassel.

King Oddball – 71%

Another game that I’m so close to finishing that I can taste it. I am one trophy away from having 100% complete on this game and at this point I’m pretty dedicated to getting it, so I expect to get it within the next week. The only thing I’m working on is the diamond levels, which are hard but I only have a handful left so this shouldn’t be a problem.

Unravel TWO – 4%

This was probably the best thing to come out of E3 so far and the best part was that after they announced it, it was available! Amazing. I loved the first Unravel, you can read my full review of that game here, and I’m loving the second game as well. I look forward to playing more of this game this week and getting into the whole story that unfolds behind the story of Yarny.

Unravel TWOUnravel TWOUnravel TWO

And there you have it a total of 16 trophies for the week. Not a bad haul for me for one week. Next week now will be touch and go with trophies because while I’ll be getting Unravel TWO trophies and trophies for a game that I think might be coming out tonight, Fallout Shelter, I’ll also try to finish up Detroit: Become Human and King Oddball. If I could finish these two games up and get the 100% complete and platinum, then next week’s trophies will be good even if there aren’t many. I’ll let you know how things turned out for me next week.

These Past Two Weeks in Trophies 05-20-2018 – 06-02-2018

These past two weeks if anything have been super hectic that I’m even surprised I was able to play anything and even get a decent amount of trophies. There was work stuff, a vacation to MegaCon, an unplanned hospital visit, some more work stuff, and just regular life. Anyway, I was able to game so here’s a look at what I’ve been up to trophy wise.

Dead Island – Definitive Edition – 53%

I jumped back into this game this past week to play with my buddy @tjarvinen86 and the first thing that happened when I turned on the game was that I got a trophy. That was some pretty exciting stuff because no one expects a trophy for just turning on a game. Anyway, I’m having a great time jumping back into this game and just having fun which is what this game should be about since you really can’t take this game seriously.

Dead Island - Definitive Edition

Detroit: Become Human – 61%

So I not only started this game this past week, but I also finished it. I have to say that while it started off slow and a little on the boring side, things picked up at the end and I’m excited to go back and clean up some trophies before starting a new playthrough and hopefully getting the platinum for this game.

God of War – 70%

So I made some progress on this game the week of MegaCon, before I went to the actual convention, but I’m still having a really hard time with the collectibles because they’re just a pain in the ass. I’m missing a raven somewhere and even though I’m following a guide, I still feel pretty lost and I feel like I have no idea what I’m doing. I want to be able to finish this game and just be done with it, but I’m kind of finding it hard to get back into it at the moment.

God of WarGod of WarGod of War

King Oddball – 61%

One more trophy for this game as I slowly make my way through it. This happened before MegaCon and I haven’t touched the game since. It’s one of those games that’s impossible to play all at once so I’m really not in a rush to finish it as long as I eventually finish it.

King Oddball

And there you have it, two weeks 35 trophies, a big improvement from my previous counts even if it is for two weeks. I’m pretty happy with my progress and have a good outlook on things even though this week is going to be a little hectic with work and trying to finish up telling you guys about all the awesome stuff that happened at MegaCon this year. Anyway, when I do get a chance to game, I’ll probably play a little King Oddball, but my main focus will be to get the Detroit: Become Human platinum trophy before getting back into God of War and finding the million collectibles that I’m still missing.

This Week in Trophies 05-13-2018 – 05-19-2018

So this week was a fun one, and I write that in the most sarcastic way possible. There was another meeting with my fantastic boss, another sarcastic note, had a buddy of mine get so tired of the way things are going at work that he just up and quit, and basically had yet another shit week. As much as you’re probably tired of hearing about this I’m tired of writing about it, so on with my little list of trophies.

God of War – 57%

So I busted my ass this week trying to get trophies for this game, but it seems like they randomly come and require a hell of a lot of grinding to find collectibles and other things. I’m getting a little burnt out on finding all of these collectibles, but I really want the platinum for this game. I have to say though as much as I liked the game itself, this running around thing is kind of ruining the game itself for me. That’s not a good thing.

God of WarGod of WarGod of WarGod of WarGod of WarGod of War

King Oddball – 57%

I played this game again this week, but like always spent more time then I really wanted to on it. I think I just have to take a day maybe a day and half to finish it completely and just be done with the whole thing so that I stop playing because I really don’t want to play as much as I do when there are a bunch of other games sitting there waiting to be played.

King Oddball

And there you have it, another 7 trophies for this week to add to my pathetic number of trophies as of late. This upcoming week is going to be a tough one because I take a little break from gaming and go on vacation! Going on vacation means no time for gaming, but in the few days that I do have to game I’ll be trying to finish up King Oddball and God of War. Like I said last week, the Far Cry 5 platinum is going to have to wait until my buddy, @tjarvinen86, follow him on Twitter because he’s cool, gets the game and I have someone to do the co-op missions with along with the multiplayer stuff with. Anyway, just an FYI, this blog will be on hold next week since I’ll be on vacation and the next time I post about trophies will be the following week. Hopefully I can actually get stuff done.

This Week in Trophies 05-06-2018 – 05-12-2018

Another week, another crap week for trophies. I’m seriously not happy with where I’m at with trophies lately and it’s just because there is a hell of a lot going on. Let’s see my normal week in review was another shitty week at work, where it’s becoming a common thing and I try to just swallow all of my stress and smile acting like everything is completely normal. Then there was an issue with my dog this week, which why not just add that to the pile right? Anyway, that’s a very brief look at my real life and here’s a look at my trophy life.

God of War- 35%

Shit, these collectibles and completing every single area of this map is just killing me. I mean seriously there are so many collectibles and places that you have to 100%. It’s crazy. I mean just crazy. I have no idea where to start half the time when I start the game and usually I have no idea where I left off. At this point it’s one big cluster fuck of trying to find random shit.

God of War

King Oddball – 52%

So when I was young and carefree, mostly because I was unemployed, I had these games that I would call “starter games” they would start my gaming time which usually lasted anywhere between 8-10 hours a day. Now I would play these games for maybe an hour at the most before going to the next game, probably something better, before ending my gaming time with a huge AAA game. Anyway, I still try to do that now even though I don’t have 8-10 hours to game and I usually get stuck playing these little games and not moving onto anything else. This is where King Oddball came in this week. It’s not a bad game, the graphics are a little off, and it’s not a great game either. It’s just a starter game that turned into more than that this week.

King OddballKing OddballKing OddballKing OddballKing OddballKing Oddball

So that was it. Only 7 trophies this week. A pretty crappy trophy week and I don’t expect it to be any better this upcoming week. I am going to try and finish King Oddball as well as God of War. I might try to get some random trophies in Far Cry 5, but I think I’ll wait to do that until a new buddy of mine gets the game and then we can grind out some trophies. I’ll let you know how things turn out next week.

This Week in Trophies 04-29-2018 – 05-05-2018

This was another sad week for trophies. I remember when I used to get so excited writing this blog because I would have 50+ trophies to brag about, now it’s like I’m lucky if I make it to 20 which is extremely rare these past few weeks / months. Anyway, this is what my week in the gaming world looked like.

Gems of War – 83%

I really don’t mind the updates for this game, especially with the improvements that it makes upon the game, but seriously what the hell with all of the trophies it has to add! I mean, I try to play this game to keep up with my Guild, which is severely lacking members, but it just seems never ending and it wants you to devote your entire life to it. If you play this game and are looking for a Guild, please let me know. One of these days I’m going to call it quits with this game, just not any time soon.

Gems of War

God of War – 32%

So I know how I’ve said this game is great and all, and it is, but I just thought the end, which I think was the end because after I finished the last mission the credits rolled, was just eh. Compared to the game as a whole, which was epic, it just felt like the ending fell really flat. I hate saying that because the game was amazing and such an improvement, but I don’t know about the ending. I’m going to have to think about it as I go back to get some more trophies.

God of WarGod of WarGod of WarGod of War

King Oddball – 23%

This game was free, starting this week and the rest of the month, and even though I vowed not to start a new game until I finished God of War or Far Cry 5, I couldn’t resist playing this game. I think it’s because I’ve played Baseball Riot and Tennis in the Face and I wanted to play this game because it’s basically the same thing. The only thing I can say about this game right now is that the graphics are really bad. They’re like blurry, and I don’t know if that was supposed to be like that or if it just is for some reason.

King OddballKing OddballKing OddballKing OddballKing Oddball

That was it for this week, a lousy 10 trophies. This week my plan is to try and get the platinum for both God of War and Far Cry 5. I know it’s a hefty goal, but I think if I set my mind to it that I can do it, plus I have some free time this week. Not a lot, but some. I still have a bunch of prep for MegaCon which is less than 20 days away! So there’s that…and there’s work, which I hate, but I’ll let you know how things go next week.
