Rocket League Review (PS4)

I really had no intention of playing this game even though I added it to my library while it was free for PS+, but I was looking for something new to play and some free space just happened to open up on my already full PS4 hard drive so I thought what the hell. After playing for the past two weeks, here’s what I thought about the game.

Rocket League is all about playing Soccer, or Football depending on where you’re from, with a bit of demolition derby thrown in just for some added fun. That’s right, Soccer played by little miniature cars. Sound fun? Because it totally is. I didn’t think that a sports game which has absolutely no story, not even the season mode, could actually be so fun to play.

When I first started playing this game, I played almost non-stop. Playing against the computer was fun, playing in the season mode was fun, and even playing online was fun. Unfortunately like most games that are wash, rinse, and repeat repetitive it quickly becomes less and less fun each time you play. I went from playing 3+ hours a day down to playing 30 minutes a day towards the end. While this did ruin my experience with playing just a little bit, I still enjoyed just how new the game was and how it was unlike any other sports game that I played.

The playability for this game is super simple. Drive your car around the field, hit the ball, get the ball into the goal. You don’t even have to learn that many buttons! I will say that at times the camera angles were a little sketchy since most of the time the match is so crazy that you don’t even know where the ball is and using the “ball cam” is basically useless since it makes driving awkward. When you aren’t using the “ball cam” the driving is just about flawless. I’ve played a lot of games where you have to drive around and this by far was the easiest. I liked the way the cars maneuvered and I liked that it was easy to maneuver the car how I wanted. Even jumping for the ball and hitting it in an angel became easy after some practice. I also want to mention that while this game was bug and glitch free, with the exception of one trophy glitch, it did make my PS4 run really hard and get really hot to the point that I had to shut it off for fear of overheating.

The graphics for this game are superb and worthy of the PS4, unlike some other games that I’ve been playing. I didn’t have much expectations going into this game graphic wise, but Rocket League totally delivered. The graphics were crisp and detailed for just about every aspect of this game as well as each different arena that was available to play in. I also liked the graphics that went into making each car as well as the customization although I do wish that there were some more color choices for the cars.

Of course, there are trophies for this game. 36 trophies to be exact and that includes a very do-able platinum trophy. Most of these trophies are extremely easy to get and it really just requires you to play the game. You’ll get a lot of them naturally as you progress through the game, but there are also trophies that you need to grind out. The Stocked trophy requires you to unlock every item in the game for a total of 194 different items. You unlock items by playing so win or lose, you are guaranteed an item at the end of your game. Another trophy you’ll have to grind for is the Far, Far Away… trophy. As of right now I’m pretty sure something is glitched when it comes to this trophy that requires you to travel 500km in distance. Either the wheels aren’t keeping track of the distance traveled correctly or you don’t really have to travel 500 km, I’m really not sure but I do know that the trophy will unlock pretty randomly while you are playing. I did have a little notification come up on my “What’s New” section of my PS4 for milestone distances such as 100 km, 250 km, and then again for 500 km when I got the trophy or then that I never really knew where I stood with this trophy making the grind to get this trophy even more frustrating.

Big Thanks! You need a friend to get the Barras Bravas trophy for this game, and I couldn’t have done it without one of my buddies who was nice enough to help me get this trophy which was the last one I needed for the platinum. Thanks G!

Of course there’s multiplayer for this game because when it comes to a sports game who really wants to play against the AI over and over again? No one and that includes me. Not really one for multiplayer, as you already know if you frequent this blog, I actually really enjoyed the multiplayer portion of this game and actually preferred it. Most of the time my games were lag free, but I did encounter a few server errors during my last couple of games which rendered the online section of this game unplayable. Other then that one little problem, this was one of the best multiplayer experiences that I’ve had in a long time. I enjoyed the people that I played with, and I even enjoyed the quick chat option so that I didn’t have to use a microphone to tell someone that they made a nice shot.

Overall I give this game a 3 out of 5

What’s Great:
+ Soccer and demolition derby makes for some really fun times.
+ Great playability makes driving each of the cars easy and carefree.
+ Nice detailed graphics worthy of the PS4.
+ Multiplayer is the best part of this game.

What’s Not So Great:
Doing the same thing over and over again gets a little repetitive after a while and the game quickly becomes boring.
While the servers were great at first, they were up and down on my last few games making the multiplayer unplayable.
No major bugs or glitches, but my usually cool running PS4 had to work extra hard to play this game and became really hot in the process.

This is a really fun and solid game from Psyonix. Since I’m not a big sports fan I’m glad that I got this one for free, but the $19.99 price tag for the game is worth it if you’re a big sports fan and you plan on playing this game beyond getting the platinum trophy. The servers for this game are still extremely active all day long and I would really like to see the servers become a little more stable in the future as well as something added to the game to make it less repetitive. I think a nice little addition like daily, weekly, monthly, and even personal challenges can go a long way for this game and make it’s shelf life even longer.

Weekly Trophy Tip – Rocket League – Stocked

This is one of those trophies that unfortunately there are no tricks that I can offer to help you. You simply have to play the game as all the unlocks are pretty much random, but I can at least offer a checklist of what you’re going to need in order to get the trophy.

Rocket League – Stocked
Collect all items – Gold
TIP: There are 194 items to collect in the game and to collect all of them you’re going to have to play at least 194 games. Win or lose, you’ll unlock a different item each time you play so you don’t need to worry about always winning in order to unlock an item. Here are the 194 different items that you’ll need to collect:

Body – 11

Rocket Leauge

Decal (Every car but Sweet Tooth has 7 decals to unlock) – 70

Have anything additional to add to my tip? Let me know in the comments section below and I’ll add it in and give you credit. Need help with a specific trophy? I’m always looking for my next weeks tip so throw out some suggestions in the comments section. If I have the trophy I’ll post a tip on how to get it.

This Week in Trophies 07-19-2015 – 07-25-2015

Not a whole lot to brag about this week as I’m currently trying to finish two games while I just started a new one. Luckily the newest episode of Game of Thrones was released this week so it bumped up my lackluster trophies just a bit. Here’s what I got this week.

Fallout 3 – 2%

This isn’t my first time playing Fallout 3, but it is my first time playing with trophies. I remember playing this game when it first came out and then dying just as soon as I left the vault and completely giving up on the game. That was before RPG’s became my very favorite video game genre. I bought the game a few years back and finally decided to give it another go with the upcoming release of Fallout 4. I plan on leisurely playing this game in order to get a better feel for it this time around.

Rocket League – 87%

No platinum trophy this week, but I’m almost there. Currently I’m grinding out the Stocked trophy. I’m really close to having all the collectibles and once I do that should unlock the Battle-Car Collector trophy since I’m just missing Sweet Tooth. After that I just need to play with a friend to get my platinum.

Game of Thrones – 78%

The newest episode was pretty unexpected, but not unwelcome as I’m eager to finish up this game to see how it all ends. I’m thinking that Telltale is going to release the final episode before the holiday season so they can have the full game out on disc just in time for all the major holiday shopping. I’ll have my review up for the latest episode, A Nest of Vipers, by Wednesday.

And that was it for this week. A pretty slow week, but that’s what happens when you’re trying to finish up two games at once and then just to add something new to the mixture you start a new game. So this week I’ll be spending most of my Sunday playing Fallout 3 and then it’s back to work for the rest of the week trying to finish up Rocket League, Borderlands: The Handsome Collection – Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, and Sparkle 2. I’ll try not to start anything new this week, but you never know especially when boredom kicks in.

This Week in Trophies 07-12-2015 – 07-18-2015

I was just totally disgraced by last week’s showing of only 3 trophies and I knew this week that I had to redeem myself. I just had to and there was no question that I was going to do it. By the end of the week, I not only redeemed myself but I completely smashed my own expectations on how many trophies I could get this week. Take a look at what I got.

Borderlands: The Handsome Collection – Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel – 81%

I’m so close to the platinum trophy for this game that if I stopped now it would be an absolute crime. I finally reached level 50 this week which seemed a lot harder this time around then in Borderlands 2 as well as I started three new characters. I finished with every characters skill trophy except for Claptrap which I’m still working on. I also completely finished all of the trophies for The Holodome.

Rocket League – 62%

After reaching level 50 in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, I wanted to try something new before starting a new playthrough. After looking through my list, I decided on this month’s free PS+ game. I’m happy to report that I am only 8 trophies away from the platinum after only 3 days of playing since I started on Thursday. The last 8 trophies really just require me to continue to play the game so we’ll see how it goes this upcoming week.

And that was it for this week. This was probably one of the best trophy weeks that I had in a while and that makes me happy. Now for this week, I’m going to continue on with Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. Will I get the platinum by the end of the week? I’m not really sure since I still have a lot to do, but I’m not giving up. I’ve spent so much time on this game and I want that platinum. I’m in the same boat with Rocket League as well, but I think as long as I continue to play a couple of games a day the platinum trophy will come naturally. While I work on these two games, I’m going to go back and try to finish up Sparkle 2 on my PS3 which has been neglected, I’ll also be starting Fallout 3 this week, and I’ll be playing Episode 5 of Game of Thrones when it comes out on Tuesday. Another busy week, and I’ll let you know how it all turned out next week.
