E3 2018 – Sony Conference

Since I’m such a Sony fangirl, I’m always excited for this press conference the most. It’s like Christmas day sometimes for me because I’m just waiting to see what great games that I’m going to be able to play in the future. I will say that I have been let down in the past though, but I come back year after year super excited as always especially for the exclusives.

We start with some music to set the stage for The Last of Us Part II. The first noticeable thing is the age progression for Ellie. She’s not the sweet and innocent young girl that you meet in The Last of Us. She’s matured into a woman who has seen some stuff and it shows. Not to mention Ellie gets some action before the audience gets into seeing some actual action themselves with gameplay. The gameplay is really fluid and super intense making me even more excited for this game. I love the fact that Ellie is the playable character now and can’t wait to see her story unfold. Unfortunately, the game didn’t show a release date.

After this showing there some intermission as they move people from one area to another. This was a little weird and I understand they did this to set the mood for The Last of Us Part II, but it was still awkward. During intermission though, it was confirmed that God of War will soon have a New Game + added to it and that there would be some new Call of Duty multiplayer maps available for Black Ops III and Black Ops IV if you pre-order Black Ops IV. Then there was some Destiny 2 stuff shown during this very long and once again I can’t stress enough very awkward intermission.

Some music after the intermission which then goes into showing the newest game to come out of Sucker Punch which is Ghost of Tsushima. While this game is visually stunning and the actual gameplay looks good, I’m not a big samurai person and this seems to be the year of samurai games. The game holds absolutely no interest for me what so ever and the preview makes me think of Bob’s Burger. If you’re a fan you know the episode I’m talking about and it’s the one where Bob and Louise are watching the old timey dubbed samurai movie about the father and daughter.

There was some weird stuff going on in the background, I guess to remind people of that game Dreams. Remember that game? It was shown off a couple of years ago, anyway this game made a not so subtle appearance throughout the whole show. Anyway, a supernatural type game is shown next and it’s called Control. It doesn’t really look polished enough to show off at E3 which makes my interest in it dwindle.

From there we go into something that everyone has been wanting and waiting for and it’s a complete remaster of Resident Evil 2. It even has a release date of 1/25/2019. After that quick announcement there was another announcement for a Rick and Morty type game, probably because it’s from the same people, called Trover Saves the Universe. This is something that I might play. Might being the key word.

Apparently no conference is complete without something relating to Kingdom Hearts III, so we get another look at it here and it’s the same thing that’s been shown off two other times now. It makes me wonder what happened to Sony only showing a select number of games this year to make the show more intimate? It was like they scrapped that at the last minute and just threw a bunch of crap on the screen.

Now for some more Death Stranding and this game has been shown to death at E3 and various other events. Some gameplay is finally shown and it makes the game look completely unimpressive, yes I’m ready for all of the hate, than all of the other trailers that were shown in previous years. It looks like this game did a complete 180 and the only good thing about this game is going to be the cinematics and you cannot have a game that has crap gameplay and good cinematics. At this point, I’ve completely lost interest in this game that I’ve been waiting for. Still no release date even though two new characters were introduced and unless something can change my mind this is a firm no for me.

Another samurai game, or at least it looks like a samurai game, is shown off quickly and it’s Nioh 2.

The show ends with the new Spiderman game which seems like the only big exclusive to be released for the rest of the year. I have to say that even when this game was first announced it held no interest for me and seeing it again just makes me roll my eyes because it’s really not that impressive anyway. I think the only Spiderman game that I played was one that was on the original PlayStation with my cousin. This beat ‘em up type Spiderman game just isn’t my thing and it seems way too campy for me.

And that ends a show that was even more underwhelming than the EA show. The only good game that was shown off was The Last of Us Part II. Overall I was really disappointed with the showcase of games that were shown and the overall show itself.

What to Expect at E3…Maybe Part 3

Since I’ve already covered the EA conference, the Microsoft conference, and the Bethesda conference the only two conferences to cover now are the Ubisoft conference and Sony conference. Both conferences promise to be equally exciting as they normally are, but of course I’ll be looking forward to the Sony conference the most because of the PlayStation fan girl that I am. Now let’s take a look and see what I’m expecting at both conferences.

Ubisoft Conference

• First of all I’m expecting something on the new Assassin’s Creed game since it’s already been leaked everywhere so there’s no doubt my mind that they’re going to be promoting it somehow even though I’m not expecting it to come out until at least late 2018.
• As usual I’m also expecting some Tom Clancy stuff whether it be something to add to The Division or Ghost Recon or any of the other Tom Clancy franchises this is always at the conference so there’s no doubt in my mind that this will be at the conference again this year.
• As usual I’m sure they’ll do some big thing for Just Dance that will be equally as boring as it is every single year and make me roll my eyes and groan.
• Since it’s already been leaked, I’m also expecting to see more on this Far Cry 5. I’ve been an on again off again fan of this series so I’m interested to see where this game will be going.
• Because it’s been at, I don’t know, like two or three E3’s is now that they’ve been promoting this new South Park game, I’m expecting this game to have some more footage since it does have a finalized release date. I swear though if the date changes again then I’m going to completely loose hope with this game.

SURPRISES!

While I’m not really expecting any news on this front I would be completely surprised if they announced anything for Watch_Dogs. What would surprise me the most is if they announced that they finally had a stable server for For Honor.

Sony Conference

• Because they’ve been promoting it so much and they spent so much money on it they’ll definitely have something for Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. Maybe some more gameplay and some more details about it since it does come out in August.
• Since not everyone has adapted to the new PlayStation VR I’m expecting they’ll do something spectacular for it try to get more people to buy it.
• I’m definitely expecting a release date for the new God of War game as well as The Last of Us 2. I’m thinking that God of War will come out probably holiday time this year while the Last of Us 2 will get an early 2018 release date. While we’re talking about release dates I’m hoping at least that they give some kind of release date or release time frame for Detroit: Become Human since they’ve been promoting it for the last two E3’s and there’s been nothing to come out of it.
• As always I’m sure they’ll be some PlayStation exclusive’s that will, like usual, compete with the Microsoft exclusive’s that they show at their press conference.
• I’m also expecting another weird ass promo for Death Stranding because everything surrounding that game just seems weird along with Day’s Gone, but I’m not expecting them to come out anytime soon.
• Finally with the success of Horizon Zero Dawn, I’m fully expecting them to announce their plans for either an expansion or just some DLC.

SURPRISES!

While I don’t think this is really going to happen, I would be really surprised if they announce the PlayStation 5. I still think it’s way too soon for this but they might just want to put it out there since Microsoft will probably be debuting the new Xbox Scorpio.

And that’s it. That’s everything I’m expecting to come out of this year’s E3. Agree with me? Disagree with me? Let me know in the comments section below and as always I will be having my full review of each and every conference after E3 is over.

E3! E3! E3! – Part # 2

As promised, here’s part two of my E3 blog. I’ll go over some highlights from the Ubisoft conference along with the Sony conference, let you know what I thought was missing in this years E3, and I’ll let you know who I thought won the whole Sony and Microsoft yearly battle. I think the outcome of who I thought won might surprise you so you’ll have to keep reading to find out.

For Honor

I’ve been calling this for months and I was right, it’s going to be so hard to keep up with my gaming goal of not pre-ordering anything for Ubisoft this year because did you see that showing of games? From South Park to the Tom Clancy games to Assassin’s Creed, the whole show was just action packed and filled with games that I wanted to play. For Honor had to be one of the best new games that I had seen throughout all of E3. The whole game is just new and original and it looks badass. I was really just impressed with the whole show, but I’m going to be a little cautious with the company as a whole. I really hate having a bunch of unplayable games sitting on my shelf and after last years Assassin’s Creed stuff, I don’t mind waiting. While I hopefully can stick to my goal and not pre-order anything I might have to pick up a couple when they’re on sale.

Adult Multiplayer Conversations: Did you see how “grown up” everyone was who was playing the multiplayer live on stage? You could tell that everything was totally scripted because I have seriously never played with other players who were that mature while playing. This even includes the group of friends that I play with. We are never that mature and when I play with randomes, I mostly get stuck in rooms with children screaming garbage at me while their mommy yells at them in the background.

Horizon: Zero Dawn

Of course it wouldn’t be E3 without some rumors about The Last Guardian, but this year they turned out to be true and the Sony press conference opened with this game. This game that everyone has been talking about for years and years just made me say “huh” as I have no idea what the hell is going on with this game or what all the hype is about. I seriously wasn’t impressed at what I saw. What I was impressed with, wasn’t the new Uncharted 4, which I’m still excited about, it wasn’t the new realistic looking Hitman, it wasn’t even No Man’s Sky, which in my opinion looks way too ambitious, it was Horizon: Zero Dawn. The fall of man, the rise of the machines, a new female lead (take that Tomb Raider), this game looked like a winner to me. When the preview was done all I wanted was to see more of this game. This game had me totally excited and I really can’t wait to play. Another game that had me on the edge of my seat was Firewatch. Is it a mystery game, an action adventure game, who the hell is that voice on the walkie-talkie? The whole game seems like a mystery and I can’t wait to learn more and then finally get my hands on it. Ugh, and did you see how Uncharted 4 had to be restarted during the demo? It makes me happy that this game was delayed but what a downer to have something like that happen during the press conference. The game looks phenomenal on the PS4 and I’m loving the banter between Drake and Sully but I thought it was somewhat of a fail to not have the game function properly.

Nightmares: Did you ever wonder what your dreams would be like if they could be turned into a game? Wonder no more with the announcement of Dreams. Create your dreams and have other people play through them while you play through their dreams. While this game looks pretty neat and “artsy”, I just think that this game just looks way to difficult and it seems like you have to be an actual artist to be able to excel at this game. There is no way that someone who isn’t art inclined is going to pick up this game and make some of the fantastical designs that were shown off during the preview. I also think that this game, which is meant to be intriguing and creative, will turn into something extremely filthy extremely fast. I can predict that minutes after release there will be a dream titled “Boobs” somewhere.

MIA

Even though this E3 was just as huge as previous E3’s, I felt like a few things were missing from the show as a whole. I was totally bummed out watching the Microsoft and EA conference and didn’t even hear anything about Dragon Age: Inquisition DLC or an expansion. I mean the game was released in November, ended in a bit of a cliff hanger and we get nothing. E3 would have been a perfect place to announce something for this game that won so many game of the year awards. Not hearing anything at all makes me think of some problems behind the scenes and I really hope not because not only do I love this game, but I also love the franchise as a whole. I also thought that this E3 was sorely missing some Borderlands news. I would have taken anything, a short clip, some art from the new game, something, but nothing at all. Just an empty space where some Borderlands news should have been. Although I won’t mind if Watch_Dogs never gets mentioned again and never has a sequel, I was kind of expecting it at the Ubisoft conference. I was surprised when something for this game wasn’t announced, but not surprised enough that I’ll lose any sleep over it. Another game that I thought was missing from this year’s E3 was God of War. To tell you the truth it seems like the franchise at this point is finished, but I was still expecting something new to wow me and make me regain my enthusiasm for a game that I’ve been playing since the PS2.

Although it pains me to say it but at least as a loyal Playstation fan I can admit it, Microsoft was the clear winner this year. Their show was huge and showed a bunch of new stuff, even that weird looking new controller, they also showed that they were willing to listen to their fans and make adjustments to their system in order to allow backwards compatibility. While Microsoft is listening to the fans need for backwards compatibility Sony is still pushing the whole PS Now thing that I refuse to pay for at such a high price. The price is just not worth it and I just don’t see a lot of people using this. Not to mention they had a huge showing of games both first and third party that didn’t look all that bad. Sony had a lot of games that were shown as well, but I think that it wasn’t enough compared to the Microsoft show. Overall I thought that E3 as a whole was a huge success as usual and I can’t wait to start getting my hands on some of the new games that were announced while trying to wait patiently for the games that won’t even hit the shelves this year.
