Steven Universe: Save the Light Review (PS4)

Steven Universe: Save the Light

I have to admit, I’m a little ashamed of myself when it comes to this game. Not because I played it, but because I didn’t even know it existed. Knowing how much I just love Steven Universe, my buddy @tjarvinen86 told me that he found a Steven Universe game in the PSN store. I didn’t believe him, so I went searching and came up empty. I didn’t give up my search though and eventually was able to find this game. Thanks for keeping it so well hidden PSN, like it’s some sort of secret or something. After finding it I immediately downloaded it and started playing because I couldn’t help myself. One month later I finally finished the game and got all of its trophies, so that means it’s time for a review.

Steven Universe: Save the Light is based off the show Steven Universe, so if you don’t know your Steven Universe, better do some catching up. Anyway, after the events of Steven Universe: Attack the Light, which was a small mobile game that I had no idea existed until now, Steven and the Crystal Gems are off to find the Light Prism and save it from a new Homeworld Gem Hessonite who wants to reclaim the Light Prism and use it for her own evil doings. Will Steven and the Crystal Gems be able to stop Hessonite and reclaim the Light Prism? You’ll travel to a bunch of different familiar areas from the show in order to go on the hunt for Hessonite and take her down once and for all.

Neato Burrito! Can I say how much I loved that this game used all of the regular voice actors from the show for this game and added in Christine Baranski as Hessonite? This really made the game and it made me feel like I was interacting with the show and playing inside of the show which was just amazing for this super Steven Universe fan.

So I loved this game. Of course I did, it’s a Steven Universe game. The plot of the game was really great and don’t worry if you’re like me and didn’t play Attack the Light because you get a whole recap at the beginning of the game about what happened so you won’t be left in the dark. I thought it was great to go through the game and visit areas that you see all the time and do battle as Steven and the Crystal Gems while sometimes taking along other characters like Peridot, Connie, and Greg. Not to mention that when you aren’t working on the main quest of the game, there are side quests that you can do for the people of beach city. The game was a nice mix of an action adventure game and an RPG game as you had some silly decisions to make throughout the game. It was also just really fun to play and for a while I considered it my happy game because how can you not look at this game and just smile? Anyway, that was until the game was over and the trophy grinding began, but we’ll get into that in a little while.

As much as I loved this game, I didn’t love the many glitches that this game had. Sometimes the game froze for no reason, sometimes characters got stuck and the game had to be restarted, and sometimes it just plain didn’t work. This kind of killed some of the enjoyment for me and the immersion when it came to this game. I never thought I would sigh in frustration so much at what should have been a simple little game. Other than that, the mechanics of the game are super easy as each battle is basically turn based and based on the amount of stars that are collected in your meter. Each move that either Steven or the other characters make costs a certain amount of stars and you get the chance to hit it perfectly by hitting X when the star under the chosen character you’ve attacked turns purple. The same went for blocking as when one of the characters on the battlefield was getting attacked a star would appear under them and a perfect block would occur when you hit X as the star turned purple. Thrown in there for good measure were some pretty brain challenging puzzles to complete. Other than that, the gameplay for this game was more than I really expected going in.

The graphics for this game were just great as they were exactly like the show down to the smallest detail of beach city and the strawberry battlefield. Not to mention the characters and the people around beach city like Onion, Sally, Lars, and so many more were just perfection. I really felt like I was just wandering through the show throughout the entire game. This made the game even better as it was cool to explore and see how the graphics got everything right and really made this game feel like a really long Steven Universe episode.

Now onto the trophies for this game. There are a total of 20 trophies for this game including a platinum trophy. While the trophies aren’t hard to get, they aren’t the easiest to get either. They will require some grinding, which wasn’t really expected and kind of ruined the magic of the game just a little bit. Before we get onto the grindy trophies, let’s talk about the other trophies. Some of them are luck based and you’ll just get them when you get them and others are for just playing the game. There are some collectible trophies and a trophy that requires you to complete each area of the game to 100%. Now onto the grindy trophy. This is for upgrading each character’s equipment in Bismuth’s forge. In order to do this you’ll have to go through the game and collect Chroma. This shouldn’t be a problem, but this is where the grinding comes. Let’s use the Yellow Chroma as an example which you’ll need 10 of each to complete a few designs. There are really only three places you can find this Yellow Chroma and once you collect it, you can’t just leave the area, come back and pick up more Chroma. That would be to easy. You actually have to wait an hour before going back to the area and picking up the Chroma. When this is the last trophy that you need, it becomes a bit tedious as you go to your Yellow Chroma spots, pick them up, then shut off the game and wait for an hour until they re-appear. These are on a strict timer and you have to wait exactly one hour before going back into the game and picking up more Chroma. Sure you can mess around with the PSN clock, but that’s kind of cheating.

There is no multiplayer for this game and I absolutely love it. I didn’t want to share my Steven Universe game with anyone, even though I could have seen the appeal of it having multiplayer, this was just one of those games that was better off without it. Not every game has to have multiplayer in it, and this is one of those games.

Overall I give this game a 3 out of 5.

What’s Great:
+ It’s a Steven Universe game and if you love Steven Universe what’s not to love about this game since it has everything that a normal Steven Universe episode would have!
+ All of your favorite characters return and even voice their characters in this game making it even more fun to play when you hear your favorite characters voice and it matches up to the ones in the show.
+ The graphics for this game make you feel like you’re playing out an episode of Steven Universe as they are so well done and get every single detail right.

What’s Not So Great:
The glitches in this game, while not game breaking, are just annoying as hell as you’ll have to stop, save, and restart throughout many of them. This leads to some frustrating and controller breaking moments that just make this game a little less fun then it should have been.
I can understand trophy grinding, every game has it so that you keep playing the game if you want the platinum trophy, but this takes it to a whole new level as there are actual timers on the Chroma that you need to collect. What is up with that? It’s just insane and really just makes that final trophy you’re going to need a little less fun to get.

This game was a really welcomed surprise to my collection as I love Steven Universe and I loved this game despite its downfalls. Now this game certainly isn’t for everyone and is basically a fan service for Steven Universe fans. It also comes at a hefty price tag of $24.99 so it isn’t cheap. I would say that if you are a die hard Steven Universe fan like I am, then you’ll want to play this game, but I suggest waiting for a sale of some kind because it’s a bit pricey. Don’t worry about not playing the first game either because you get a recap at the beginning of the game and it serves its purpose so that you aren’t lost. If you aren’t a Steven Universe fan then I would say to give this game a pass since it’s pretty lore heavy and you’ll probably be lost unless you do some Steven Universe research.

This Week in Trophies 09-02-2018 – 09-08-2018

Everyone has their ups and downs and after a little bit of a downer week last week, I have to say that things are looking up again. I do hate being overly optimistic though because it just seems to bring along some bad stuff with it, so I’m not going to be overly optimistic. I will say that I had a great trophy hunting week though, so let’s get to it and see what you’ve been waiting for which is the trophies.

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate – 84%

I finally finished this game at the start of the week, which unfortunately means that I won’t be talking about it here and you’ll have to wait for my review to come out on Wednesday.

Assassin's Creed SyndicateAssassin's Creed Syndicate

Gems of War – 75%

Will this game ever be done with the DLC? A new package of DLC this week brought in new trophies and new areas to explore as well as new time consuming tasks to complete. This game is never easy and I really hate that I spent so much time trying to get that 100% in this game that I probably never will and I play this when I could be playing other games.

Gems of WarGems of War

Steven Universe: Save the Light – 100%

At the start of this week, actually 20 minutes after I finished Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, I got the platinum trophy for this game! Neato Burrito! Anyway, you know the deal though all will be said in my review which will be posted next Wednesday.

The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series Collection – 72%

I was taking my time with this game and thoroughly enjoying it until a bug in season two completely ruined my story and made choices for me that I didn’t choose. After that I’ve been in a fuck it kind of mode with this game and just have been plowing through the episodes as I try to get through a game that I once loved and just get it done. I was able to finish up the second season and The New Frontier this week and will most likely finish up the entire game today.

Drumroll please because my total amount of trophies for this week is 41! That even includes two whole platinum trophies, which is super rare for me since…years and years ago. Anyway, I had a great trophy week and it kind of helped with everything else going on which is why I love gaming so much. Anyway, for this upcoming week, I will finish The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series Collection, continue playing some Destiny 2, start streaming Rise of the Tomb Raider, and finally start The Walking Dead: The Final Season. I’ll let you know how everything turns out next week.

This Week in Trophies 08-26-2018 – 09-01-2018

This wasn’t the best week in trophies for me, but it wasn’t the worst either. It was one of those in between weeks where I just had a lot going on with work and some personal stuff that I really didn’t feel like gaming all that much. It just happens every once in a while, sometimes it feels more often lately, but it is what it is. Without going into my whole life story, let’s get into the story that you actually want to hear about and that’s my trophies.

Fallout Shelter – 100%

It took me a total of 2 months and 2 weeks, but I finally got the platinum trophy for this game! You know the deal though, if I got the platinum trophy then I really don’t talk about the game here, so you’ll have to wait for my review on Wednesday.

Fallout ShelterFallout Shelter

Gems of War – 85%

Yes, I’m still playing this game. Yes, I’m also not happy that I’m still playing this game. I can’t wait for this game to just stop with all the DLC trophies and be done so that I can finally finish the game, get my 100% and just be done with this game once and for all.

Gems of WarGems of War

Steven Universe: Save The Light – 82%

I really thought I was going to be done with this game this week and add another platinum trophy in for the week, but that totally didn’t happen. It didn’t happen for a lot of reasons and I should have read about this game a little bit before I started playing so that I knew what I had to do. Anyway, it was my mistake as I now grind for Chroma to finish up this game and get the platinum. I’m thinking it should take a few days of grinding and trying to play this game every couple of hours when I can and the platinum trophy will be mine.

The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series Collection – 21%

Done with season one, I started season two this week, but didn’t get very far as I only completed on episode. I’m kind of in a rush to finish this game, not because I want another platinum trophy for this series, but because I really want to play the final season and am holding off until I can finish this game. Ugh! I’ll try to finish up this game a little more this week if time permits.

The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series - Collection

That was it, a total of 15 trophies for the week. Not bad because at least one of them was a platinum trophy. Who can complain about a week’s worth of trophies if one is a platinum right? Anyway, for the upcoming week, I plan on continuing to work on Steven Universe: Save the Light, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series Collection, and probably some other obscure games that I have laying around. Will I start something new? I have no idea as we’ll just have to see how my week goes and I’ll let you know all about it next week.

This Week in Trophies 08-19-2018 – 08-25-2018

This was a decent week in trophies for me. I didn’t hit the 40 or 50 mark, but I did get a decent amount of trophies and I was able to get a platinum trophy at the very beginning of the week, which was great. Anyway, let’s get into the trophies that I was able to get this week.

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate – 77%

I am one trophy away from getting this platinum trophy and I’m extremely excited because this will be my third platinum trophy for an Assassin’s Creed game. Not that great considering I’ve basically played all of the Assassin’s Creed games. Anyway, I plan to have the platinum trophy for this game by the end of the week.

Castaway Paradise – 100%

I was finally able to finish this game! Which does mean that I won’t be saying much about it there, but I will have my review posted for this game this Wednesday so stay tuned for it!

Castaway ParadiseCastaway Paradise

Fallout Shelter – 98%

I’m so close to finishing this game that I might even have the platinum trophy while I write this! This is extremely exciting since I’ve been playing and complaining about this game for months. After writing this blog I’ll go check and hopefully the platinum trophy will have popped making me extremely happy and making it a great way to start off the week.

Fallout ShelterFallout Shelter

Steven Universe: Save The Light – 25%

I finally finished this game and I have to say this game is extremely stingy when it comes to giving out the trophies. Anyway, I’m looking forward to going back and finishing up this game and getting yet another platinum trophy. Will I get it this week, I have no idea, but I’m looking forward to playing and seeing.

Steven Universe: Save the Light

The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series Collection – 19%

So I finally finished season one of this collection, along with the DLC for the first season and am well on my way to working on the second season. I’m having a really great time replaying this game and I’m excited because I want to play this and play the final season which is eagerly awaiting me on my PS4.

A total of 23 trophies this week including one platinum trophy which is just great since I’ve been in a platinum trophy slump for some time. This upcoming week will be for finishing a bunch of games and hopefully getting a bunch of platinum trophies. We’ll see how things turn out and I might even start a new game this week. As always, I’ll let you know all about my trophies next week.

This Week in Trophies 08-05-2018 – 08-11-2018

After my impressive trophy haul last week, I wasn’t sure if I could keep it up this week and was really nervous that I would drop down to my usual 7 trophies or even less. I have to say that I totally kicked ass again this week and only fell short in the trophy department by two trophies. I couldn’t even believe it when I was looking at my stats for the week. With that being said, let’s get into the trophies for this week.

Assassin’s Creed Syndicate – 65%

Now that I’ve finished the game, I had my final stream of the story mode this past Friday, I just have to go back and finish up some random trophies in order to get the platinum. This is usually where the fatigue part of a game comes in, but the trophies that I’m missing are so do-able that it would be just crazy if I didn’t see it through and get them done.

Castaway Paradise – 93%

Although I also finished streaming this game, because no one really wants to see me run around collecting shells and just trying to power level, I’m still trying extremely hard to get this platinum trophy. It’s going to take a lot of grinding, but if I make it a daily ritual type game like Gems of War and Fallout Shelter then I think that I can do it.

Castaway ParadiseCastaway ParadiseCastaway ParadiseCastaway ParadiseCastaway ParadiseCastaway ParadiseCastaway Paradise

Fallout Shelter – 84%

Talking about Fallout Shelter, I was able to make some more progress on this game this week. I’m not really enjoying it as I’m over this game, but I just need to finish up a few more trophies to finally be free of this game and get my first Fallout platinum trophy.

Fallout ShelterFallout Shelter

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice – 18%

I’ve heard so many good things about this game that I finally bought it and started to play it this week. I’m in the middle of liking it and being so freaked out by it that I don’t even want to play it. I’m not sure if I’m even going to make it through my playthrough because the corruption that grows on you each time you die is up to my elbow already. Here’s hoping I can get through this game in one playthrough.

Hellblade: Senua's SacrificeHellblade: Senua's Sacrifice

Steven Universe: Save the Light – 13%

If you follow this blog or follow me on Twitter, you know how much I love Steven Universe. I just had to have this game and I’ve been having a blast playing it. Sure, it’s aggravating at times with the lack of map and is really a poorly made RPG, but it’s Steven Universe so I kind of love it.

Steven Universe: Save the LightSteven Universe: Save the LightSteven Universe: Save the LightSteven Universe: Save the LightSteven Universe: Save the Light

The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series – Collection – 3%

I really didn’t think I would be playing through the whole series of The Walking Dead again, but here I am because it came with the pre-order and came with a bunch of new trophies and a new platinum. This is the fourth time that I’m playing through the first two seasons and will be the second time I’m playing through the third season and the Michonne part. Even though I thought I would be suffering from some The Walking Dead fatigue from playing the same game so much, I’m actually loving it.

Word Search by POWGI (PS4) – 26%

I found this little game by surprise this week and just couldn’t pass it up because it was a cross-buy and it was only $8. I even convinced my friend @tjarvinen86 to get it and we’re kind of in this competition to see who can get the platinum first. He totally will since she’s been playing this game non-stop, but you never know I might just surprise him and snatch up the platinum before he does.

Word Search by POWGI (PS Vita) – 29%

I did say that this was a cross-buy and even though I should have probably just stuck to one system instead of two, that just wasn’t happening so here I am playing both at the same time. This one is a little easier for me to play because I can bring my PS Vita anywhere. More specifically, I can bring it to work and that’s what’s helping me progress with this game.

And that’s it for the week, a total of 43 trophies. Two weeks with over 40 trophies in each week is extremely rare for me and I would love to keep up this pace, but I’m not sure that I’ll be able to. We’ll all see how everything works out next week as I continue to basically follow the same routine that I’ve been following because it works. Also my OCD brain loves the routine, so I’ll let you know how things turn out next week.
