Wolfenstein: The New Order Review (PS4)

Wolfenstein: The New Order

I bought this game on a holiday sale so long ago that I don’t even remember when I actually bought it. What got me around to actually playing it was that I watched a buddy of mine play it for an hour using the PS4 Share Play. I thought the game looked awesome and I wanted to be able to play it myself, so I did. I started the game about a week after I did the Share Play thing with my buddy, and three weeks later I had the platinum trophy and then this game was ready for a review.

Wolfenstein: The New Order, puts in you the role of BJ Blazkowicz in an alternative universe where instead of the US and their allies winning WWII, the Nazis win. After a major battle that leaves BJ basically useless for years, he’s finally back and ready to take down the Nazis and restore the world to what it should be without their influence. To do that he’ll need some help and he’ll find it in an underground resistance that will help him out and give him missions along the way in this action packed game.

Generally I’m not a big fan of FPS games where there’s a lot of action and a lot of things going on at one time, except for a few games like Borderlands and BioShock, but damn this game was amazing. I loved the intense in your face action, the overall well thought out story that fit this game perfectly, and just about everything else that came with this game. This game, which is basically 10-15 hours of shooting Nazis, actually made me care about certain characters and what happened to them. Not only did it do that, but it also gave you villains that you just couldn’t wait to take down. Throughout the game I felt like I was feeling what BJ was feeling and when a game can do that, you know it’s a good one. I liked the fact that while the first time I played for the story and was totally into it, so into it that I felt that swell of accomplishment when I took out the final boss, that the other times I played it, to go back for collectibles and play on Uber, that I felt like I didn’t need to concentrate on the story that much. I could just enjoy the intense action that each and every chapter offers. Yes there were some cut scenes that couldn’t be skipped even in those playthroughs because I felt like even though I was playing just for the action, I still felt like I had some attachment to them. Overall, I can’t say enough good things about this game.

I wasn’t sure how I was going to like the playability of this game because of the whole sometimes sneaky, some times just go out there and shoot everything on sight mechanics that this game had, but I have to say that it worked out perfectly. There was a perfect balance of when you could be sneaky and when you just had to go out there and be super loud. The duel wielding guns was also an amazing perk that just made this game even more fun. The only problem that I had was that on Uber mode, things got a little laggy. I don’t know if it was because of the amount of enemies or everything that was going on at once, but I did notice that lag and died a few times because of it. While this wasn’t a major problem, it still exists inside the game and it was a little annoying.

I really enjoyed the graphics for this game because they just looked amazing on the PS4. Every single environment was detailed, the cut scenes were just flawlessly created, and the facial animations were dead on. I mean wow, this game graphically blew me away. I don’t know how many times I’ve said that I’m really not a graphics person, but this is one of those games that is just so visually amazing that I have to be in awe of it.

Finish this game and you’ll get yourself a new platinum trophy and 50 other trophies to go with it. The trophies are basically a standard list that include playing the game, making certain choices, finding collectibles, solving codes, leveling up your perks, and playing on the hardest difficulties. It sounds like a tedious list, but really it wasn’t and because I had so much fun playing this game, I didn’t mind going back and grinding to level up my perks or finding the collectibles. I’m usually not a fan of the whole playing on the hardest difficulty type trophy, but with this game I thought it was a challenge and a real blast to play. When I got the platinum I felt a real sense of accomplishment.

This is strictly a single player game and I applaud Bethesda and MachineGames for doing this. Mostly there could have been a tacked on multiplayer that would have basically been like Call of Duty. Instead the focus was on single player and for that they get some bonus points. So good on Bethesda and MachineGames for making this a strictly single player game because there are still a lot of us out there that actually like a single player experience.

Overall I give this game a 5 out of 5.

What’s Great:

+ This story of this game revolving around an alternative universe where the US didn’t win World War II and you playing as a soldier who joins the resistance to take down the Nazis’ is just genius.
+ There is great character development in this game making you care about each and every character that is in BJ’s life. This also makes for some great villains that you can’t want to take down.
+ The switch between being sneaky and being all out guns blazing is flawless and it’s all based on how you want to play. There are also some bonus points thrown in there for the dual wielding weapons.
+ Amazing graphics that were just crafted to perfection as everything works for this game including the environments and facial animations.

What’s Not So Great:

The only problem was that when playing on Uber mode the game became a little laggy because there was so much going on at once.

This game was such an amazing game that I really can’t praise it enough. It has everything that you want from a game. A hell of a lot of action, a blockbuster story to back it up, and some pretty amazing graphics. I had an awesome time playing it and even going back and doing some grinding. I couldn’t believe that this game actually made grinding fun. Anyway, if you’re a fan of the Wolfenstein series, then this is one of those that you can’t miss. If you’re new to the series like I am, then this is a great starting point. I never felt like I was lost or didn’t know what was going on. If you’re looking for a game that has a great story and in your face action, then look no further than this one.

This Week in Trophies 11-05-2017 – 11-11-2017

Trophy wise this was a pretty crazy week as I was able to get one platinum trophy, it could have been two, but I didn’t find the time, finished two games, started a new game, and just overall had a pretty busy trophy week. Anyway, let’s get into what trophies I was able to get for this week.

Wolfenstein: The New Order – 100%

This was my biggest accomplishment this week as I was finally able to get the platinum trophy after three weeks of playing this game. I can’t believe I played for three weeks and it sure as hell didn’t feel like I played that long. Anyway, my review for this game will be coming out in the upcoming weeks so stay tuned for that.

Shoppe Keep – 73%

This game still isn’t fixed and keeps crashing every so often at random times so playing it is tedious. Since I’m at the point of the game where you can set the day up and basically walk away, I play when I’m doing other things and don’t mind stopping to take on barbarians every so often. I will be happy when they patch this game though and fix the crash error.

Shoppe Keep

Assassin’s Creed: Origins – 2%

I was only able to get one day of playtime with this game, but I completely fell in love with it and can’t wait until I can get into this game a little more. The year long break of Assassin’s Creed games was well worth it as Origins offers a new story and some amazing game play. I’m not that far into the game yet, but I’m really excited to see where it goes.

South Park: The Fractured But Whole – 82%

I finally beat this game this week and the only thing I have to do is finish up with some collectibles and play on the hardest difficulty. This I know is going to be a chore, but I’m going to push myself through it and play this game a second time just because I really want to be done with this game and not have it hanging on my trophy list as unfinished.

Diablo III: Reaper of Souls – 42%

After playing this game months ago, I finally finished all five acts with a friend of mine and couldn’t be more happier to finally be able to explore bounties and rifts. I know this game is going to take a while to complete and I’m fine with that because I’m just going to take my time and play casually.

And that was it for the week. A decent week especially because of the platinum trophy. Next week is going to be crazy because I’ll be playing and streaming Assassin’s Creed: Origins, trying to finish up South Park: The Fractured But Whole, try to play the newest episode of Minecraft: Story Mode Season 2 and the final episode of Guardians of the Galaxy, get some Diablo III: Reaper of Souls time in there, and play 2 new games. It’s going to be crazy and I’ll let you know next week if I was able to pull it off.

This Week in Trophies 10-22-2017 -10-28-2017

This was a great week for trophies because I got a bunch of them. I even passed the 7,900 mark making my way even closer to the 8,000 mark. I’m still baffled at the amount of trophies that I have considering that I when I first got my PS3, I was never interested in trophies at all and thought they were stupid. Now I write a weekly blog about them, go figure. Anyway, here’s how my week went.

Wolfenstein: The New Order – 94%

I finished the main campaign of the game this week, went back to unlock all of the perks, and solved all of the enigma codes. The only thing left for me to do is play on Uber. This might be close to impossible because I really suck at this game, but I’m going to try because I want this platinum trophy. I’m going to try really hard because first of all I think this game is great and second of all, I really think with some time and patience I can get it done.

South Park: The Fractured But Whole – 67%

While I did enjoy this extremely offensive game at first, I’m starting to enjoy it a little less. The whole game itself gets old really fast, but I’m really set on finishing it and getting the platinum trophy for it so I’ll continue until I do so.

That was it for the week because Best Buy sucks and didn’t deliver Assassin’s Creed: Origins even though I was promised to have it on release day. Now I’m not expected to have it until sometime next week. What the hell? Anyway, overall not a bad week with a bunch of trophies and two games that are almost finished. This upcoming week is kind of up in the air as I will probably be going back and playing Diablo III: Reaper of Souls on the weekend with my buddy while sticking to Wolfenstein: The New Order, South Park: The Fractured But Whole, and hopefully Assassin’s Creed: Origins during the week. I’ll let you know how everything turns out next week.

This Week in Trophies 10-15-2017 – 10-21-2017

This was a pretty exciting week for trophies as I continued to play Wolfenstein: The New Order, started a new game, and played the second episode of Life is Strange: Before the Storm. I was able to do all of that with a super crazy work schedule, so I’m pretty damn proud of myself. Anyway, let’s get right into my trophy breakdown for the week.

Wolfenstein: The New Order – 38%

I continued to play this game this week, mostly live on Twitch, and I’m really enjoying it. It’s a great game and it’s one of those games that even though I’ve died like a million times, I’m OK with it and continue to play because I really like this game. I think it’s probably one of the best games that I’ve played recently. I’m looking forward to finishing the last two chapters of this game and then going back in order to clean up some trophies and then play on Uber mode.

Life is Strange: Before the Storm – 60%

The second episode of this game came out this week and I made sure to make time to play it. While I won’t say much about it here, you’ll have to wait for my review which unfortunately won’t be out for a while. I swear it’s worth the wait though and I should have my full episode playthrough on YouTube later today.

South Park: The Fractured But Whole – 23%

I started playing this game the second day it was released because my shipment got all messed up and it wasn’t delivered on release day like promised. Thanks Best Buy! Anyway, when I did start playing, I have to say that this game is just super funny. It plays out like an episode of South Park which is at times extremely offensive, but it is still funny as hell. I’m having a blast playing and can’t wait to finish.

A pretty good week with a total of 36 trophies to brag about. Not bad and I’m hoping my streak of getting this many trophies a week or possibly more will continue. Now for the upcoming week, I plan on hopefully finishing up Wolfenstein: The New Order and getting the platinum trophy for this game while I continue to play South Park: The Fractured But Whole. I’ll also stat playing Assassin’s Creed: Origins this week if I can get it on time. I’ll be playing most of this live on Twitch, so if you’re interested in watching you can always take a look at my schedule here and see what I plan on playing and when I plan on playing it. I’ll let you know how things go next week.
